Have you ever wanted something so bad you could taste it? We felt that way about the sequel to the 2004 workplace comedy Anchorman and guess what? It’s not happening. After months of rumors and false hope, Paramount has officially given the Adam McKay project the shaft.

A few days ago, McKay was in high spirits about directing Anchorman 2 and getting the old gang back together including Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd. The biggest obstacle that stood in the film’s way was its budget. All the actors who appeared in the primary roles have had huge surges in their careers, which means their pay rates have gone up significantly. But even when McKay went in and shaved down the price tag it still wasn’t enough to save Ron Burgundy and the rest of the gang.

According to McKay’s Twitter, “So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.”

Damn! Damn! Damn! We understand that Anchorman wasn’t a complete financial success ($86 million domestic) but if you can make a sequel to Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo, you can give it a chance. If the actors and the director are all willing to return for a cheaper price there’s no reason why Anchorman 2 shouldn’t be in development right now. Something smells fishy and we don’t like it!

Why do you think Paramount passed on Anchorman 2?

Do you feel like your job is a located on the seventh level of hell? Are you annoyed by office politics, gossiping co-workers, and overbearing bosses? Well, rejoice because Labor Day weekend is finally here to give you a much needed rest. In other words, this is the perfect opportunity for you to sit on your ass and eat hot dogs for three days straight. Don’t feel guilty about your indulgences. You work hard for your money, and deserve a break. To kick off the holiday, we’ve created a list highlighting our top five workplace comedies.

Remember, your job may suck but someone else always has it worse…

The one that Made the Rest Possible…

Clerks (1994)

“I’m not even supposed to be here today,” sums up the overall consensus of Kevin Smith‘s workplace classic Clerks.

Clerks earns a spot on this list because we all know how it feels to have a job, not a career, but a job. It’s something you do to keep a roof over your head, and gas in your car. But unlike Dante, the rest of us don’t have the witty dialogue of Kevin Smith to help us make it through the day.

Memorable Lines:

Randal Graves: Which did you like better? Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back?
Dante Hicks: Empire.
Randal Graves: Blasphemy.
Dante Hicks: Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader’s his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that’s what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets.

The Frightening Boss…

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

“Gird your loins!” I think many of us would agree that if Meryl Streep ran your office, you’d be scared shitless too.

The Devil Wears Prada is the perfect example of what happens when your career changes you for the worst. When your on the grind 24/7, how do you make time for yourself? This whole film is a conflict of balance; Prada vs. Payless, Gucci vs. Gap, Chanel vs. Champs, it’s like Sophie’s Choice!

Memorable Lines:

Andy Sachs: So none of the girls here eat anything?
Nigel: Not since two became new four and zero became the new two.
Andy Sachs: Well, I’m a six…
Nigel: Which is the new fourteen.

How sexist is your office?

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

“I’m Ron Burgundy. You stay classy, San Diego.” The irony of that famous signature from Anchorman, is the fact that Ron doesn’t have a classy bone in his body. He’s a misogynistic 1970′s news anchor, whose support team includes a womanizing field reporter, a closeted gay sportscaster, and a mildly retarded weatherman.

Anchorman is an example of workplace competition gone too far. Not only does Ron try to sabotage his co-anchor because she’s a woman, but he also participates in a brutal alley fight between several rival news teams, including PBS! Why would he do that? They don’t even make any money!

Memorable Lines:

Brian Fantana: Don’t get me wrong, I love the ladies. I mean they rev my engines, but they don’t belong in the newsroom.
Champ Kind: It is anchor*man*, not anchor*lady*. And that is a scientific fact.
Brick Tamland: I don’t know what we’re yelling about.
Brian Fantana: You’re with us, Ron, what do you think?
Ron Burgundy: [shouting] She… Sh… It’s terrible. She has beautiful eyes, and her hair smells like cinnamon.
Brick Tamland: [shouts] Loud noises.

The job everyone loves to hate…

Waiting (2005)

“Welcome to Thunderdome, Bitch.” Waiting is one of the grimiest workplace comedies I’ve ever seen. It centers on a rag tag team of waiters and cooks at a TGI Friday-esque restaurant. They all hate their jobs, hate the pay, and most of all they hate the customers.

Being a waiter is one of the worst customer service positions you can have. Whenever you’re dealing with people and their food, you’re going to have some problems. Waiting plays out any and every revenge scenario imaginable, so you don’t have to. Did someone at table 5 piss you off? No worries, Ryan Reynolds and Luis Guzman will put pubic hairs in their salad on your behalf.

Memorable Lines:

Calvin: Come on guys, this is bull crap. Where the hell’s my chicken sandwich?
Floyd: [Picks up chicken with tongs, drops in on the prep board. Points tongs over counter at Calvin] Fuck you, bitch!
Calvin: What the hell did I do to you, Floyd?
Floyd: [Using chicken and tongs as microphone, sings] Eat at Shenaniganz, Enjoy your food. Eat at Shenaniganz, Calvin works here!
Calvin: Oh, that’s hardly sanitary.

Monty: We have our first official beyotch of the day!

And now, the King of workplace comedies….

Office Space (1999)

“Um, I”m gonna need you to go ahead and come on in tomorrow…” Nobody wants to hear that request from their boss, especially if it’s on a Friday! Office Space is the must see workplace comedy.

Mike Judge took every annoying aspect of cubicle life and compressed it into two hours of film. The frozen computer screen, the misfed printer, the stolen stapler that always magically leaves your desk. How many times have you wanted to physically assault your office’s printer, with strategically placed rap music playing in the background?

Memorable Lines:

Peter Gibbons: What if we’re still doing this when we’re fifty?
Samir: It would be nice to have that kind of job security.
Peter Gibbons: Lumbergh’s gonna have me work on Saturday. I can tell already. I’m gonna end up doing it, because, uh… because I’m a big pussy, which is why I work at Initech to begin with.
Michael Bolton: Uh, yeah, well, I work at Initech and I don’t consider myself a pussy, okay?
Samir: Yes, I am also not a pussy.

These are just some of my favorite workplace comedies, what movies would you add to the list? And what are your favorite lines from the movies above?

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy has to be one of my favorite movies. The 2004 Judd Apatow produced film featured Will Ferrell as the title character, based in 1970′s San Diego. Ever since the infamous “alley fight,” fans have wanted to see more from Ron, Brian, Champ, and Brick. Over at Empire they spoke to Apatow himself about the prospect of bringing the news team together for one more broadcast.

Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay have been stringing us along for years in regards to a potential follow up to the news based comedy. When Empire caught up with Apatow they thought it would be a good time to get some dirt on the sequel.

“They’re making a movie now, Will and Adam,” said Apatow, referring to the duo’s cop comedy, The Other Guys. “But I guess it’s a little bit more a possibility than it was a year ago, when it wasn’t being discussed at all. When we made Anchorman, Adam and Will had a lot of ideas about what the sequel would be – they’d always laugh about where they’d take the characters.”

This is what led to the fun stuff. What if Ron and the crew were old bags still doing the same jobs, but with a geriatric twist?

According to Apatow, “The great thing is, Will can be any age and play that character. Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old. So we would always laugh that this movie could work if everybody’s really elderly.”

Even though I’d love to see them in their current state, I’ll give the senior citizen take a chance if it has a decent script attached to it. I need my Brian Fantana, and his panther cologne that smells like a dirty diaper and Indian food! If we can keep that spirit alive in the new film, I’ll be there!

How would you feel about an old Ron Burgundy?

The Germans discovered it in 1904, and they called it ‘San Diego’, which in German means ‘whale’s vagina’.

Here’s a sequel I’d love to see, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. There are so many quotable lines and ridiculous scenarios that stick out from that movie. The 2004 cult classic starred Will Ferrell as Burgundy, a sexist, self-centered, and not too bright news anchor who leads the number one news team in the San Francisco Bay area. For years there have been rumblings of a possible sequel, but now according to some of its stars, things are beginning to look a lot more serious.

Some of Burgundy’s cohorts from the Channel 4 News Team included field reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sportscaster Champ Kind (David Koechner), weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), and co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate). Over at /Film, they’ve given me hope that there may be a possible Anchorman 2 on the horizon, which means more comedy, but most importantly more poorly choreographed alley fights! While out promoting this summer’s Land of the Lost, Ferrell confirmed that everyone will be meeting next week to discuss the future of a sequel.

Director Adam McKay spoke about his interest in doing another Anchorman, while Paul Rudd divulged some sequel details surrounding the film’s setting. He said that “the movie might take place in the 1980′s or even the moon!” I’m sure that last line was a joke, but could you imagine those characters ten years later in the eighties?

What do you think of an Anchorman sequel?

I don’t pay attention to major fashion magazines. I’m more into film trades or a good novel from time to time. Yet, every once in a while there’s that “special edition” or “collector’s issue” that comes out and gets me every time. This year my guilty pleasure is the latest issue of Vanity Fair. The above photo is just one of the many satirical images that feature some of today’s most popular funny men and women. The magazine highlights who they consider to be the new comedy legends of this generation. Some of their picks include actors who’ve just made their mark in recent years, while others have been around for ages.

More on Vanity Fair and the comedy legends photo spread after the jump.

I think it’s interesting that people consider Paul Rudd to be a new up in comer. This guy has been around for almost 20 years, appearing in both dramas and comedy’s. I’m pretty sure most of you remember him from the pop culture phenomenon Clueless, as Cher’s ex-step-brother, Josh. But it wasn’t until he appeared in 2004′s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy as Brian Fantana, that he started to get consistent screen time. Do we even need to mention Jason Bateman? This guy was raised in the business as a child star. Silver Spoons, Valerie, The Hogans, do any of these shows ring a bell? As for the ladies, Leslie Mann was in The Cable Guy which came out 13 years ago, while Anna Faris made her big screen debut in 2000 with Scary Movie. I wouldn’t consider any of the above actors “new,” but its great that they’re finally getting their just desserts.

I think the most fresh faced member of this new comedy troup is Bill Hader. When Saturday Night Live premiered after losing the majority of its heavy hitting stars everyone thought the show would tank. Rookie cast members Hader and Andy Samberg seemed like the new go-to-guys for the series. But am I the only one whose noticed how Hader has emerged from Samberg’s shadow in the past two years? He’s had parts in several blockbuster movies which include, Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Tropic Thunder. This guy is definitely one to watch.

So, it’s official. This issue will end up in my hands at some point in the near future. As a theme for the photo spread, Vanity Fair payed homage to old Hollywood, while embracing the stars of today. Check out the gallery below to see what I mean.
