Robots! Despite cinema telling us over and over that once we build them, they’ll become our mechanized overlords, hell-bent on wiping out humanity — we can’t shake them. It’d still be really cool to have them around to do the dishes, our homework, vacuum, and pay our bills now and again. Right? Our fascination with robots have long been a subject of film, and here at ScreenCrave, we’ve decided to put together a list of our 10 favorite machines. From murderously insane cyborgs, to robotic friends, to well…more murderously insane cyborgs, it’s a grouping of our favorite humanoid creatures.

Note to nitpickers: Before you complain about certain absences, please note that Hal 9000 is a computer, not a robot; Data is primarily a TV show character; and the Transformers…well, those movies are terrible. They won’t be on here.

Check out our list below… (Warning, movie spoilers ahead!)

10. Ash (Alien, 1979)

It takes an amazing and threatening performance to be memorable in an Alien film, when you’re not playing an alien. That’s exactly what Ian Holm did in the science fiction classic. He created a character who at first seems like an ineffectual snob that later reveals himself as a murderous android! He was determined to sacrifice his human crew members in order to bring a dangerous alien species to Earth for study. Aside from his psycho methods, he also bleeds a milky white goo, and that’s just spooky.

9. WALL-E (WALL-E, 2008)

This is a robot that’s designed to make your eyes wet, forcing you to shout there’s just something wrong with your contact lens. WALL-E is the star of the 2008 Pixar animated film of the same name. He’s a garbage disposal robot left behind on an abandoned and uninhabitable future Earth. Within the 98 minute feature, we discover that WALL-E’s developed sentience, a heart of gold (no, not literally), falls in love with another robot, and pretty much saves humanity. Not bad for a guy whose look rips off the bot from Short Circuit.

8. Robocop (Robocop – Robocop 3, 1987 – 1993)

OK, it’s a cop who was killed, then had his face and memories grafted to robot body that stomps around, taking a bite out of Detroit crime. He also finds time to wipe out the greedy corporate overlords who created him. Do I really need to say anything else to justify Robocop’s placement on this list?

7. T-1000 (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, 1991)

The T-1000 is a cold killing machine sent from the future to murder a boy. The year’s 1991, and the kid will grow up to become the leader a resistance against the machines. Therefore, the T-1000 would have made it onto this list by that fact alone. Director James Cameron came up with the idea of a machine comprised solely of liquid metal (meaning it’s a big pile of shiny goo that can replicate anyone/anything it touches) and made it totally believable. However, it’s Robert Patrick’s hyper-precise, blankly menacing performance that truly makes this robot memorable.

6. The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant, 1999)

A 50 foot metal eating robot, the Iron Giant is without doubt the greatest animated robot of all time. A tribute to the metal machines of Cold War-era cinema, the Iron Giant is a walking destroyer of words, who with the help of a young boy’s friendship and some Superman comics, learns the value of heroism over destruction.

5. Robby the Robot (Forbidden Plant, 1956)

Remember Shakespeare’s The Tempest? It’s about a deposed Duke/magician who lives on a deserted island with his daughter, a monster, and an angelic spirit. Now imagine that story being retold as a 1950s sci-fi film, set on a distant planet, and Ariel the spirit is now Robby the Robot. Seriously. Guided by Asimov’s Three Law’s of Robotics (don’t injure a human through action/inaction, obey all human orders that don’t lead to human harm, and protect its own existence as long as humans are not harmed), Robby has appeared in numerous sci-fi films and TV shows, remaining one of the most strangely memorable bots in pop culture.

4. Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still, 1951)

As a 7” tall robot sent by aliens to wipe out humanity (if we don’t start behaving ourselves), Gort may be the most instantly recognizable of all “classic” film robots. Also gals, he is the reason sci-fi nerds will whisper “Klaatu barada nikto” to you and hope that it has an effect.

3. Roy Batty (Blade Runner, 1982)

One of the most powerful, intelligent and dangerous replicants (androids built to serve humanity) in the future of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is Roy Batty. He rebels against his human masters after he discovers his built in life span of only a few years. Wholly sentient, he returns to Los Angeles to find the man who created him and demand, simply, more time. When he discovers that he cannot extend his life, he elects to “revel in his own time.” And that’s when the madness really begins.

2. The Terminator (The Terminator – Terminator: Salvation, 1984 – 2009)

Built by SkyNet, a self-aware missile defense system of the future convinced that the destruction of humanity is the way to go, The Terminator is a mass-produced cyborg designed for one thing: killing us. In the first Terminator film, one model is sent back in time to kill Sarah Conner, whose son John, will one day lead a resistance against the machines. Portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator is a brutal killer, who’ll stop at nothing to find and kill its target. However, in the first sequel, a Terminator model is reprogrammed by John in the future, and sent back to save him as a child. Now programmed to protect and learn, the Terminator not only rescues John, but over the course of a few days, learns the value of human life. (And then two more sequels showed up that sucked. The less said of those, the better).

1. R2-D2 (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, 1977 – 2005)

Come on, how could R2 not be number one? Somehow managing to talk to everyone in the Star Wars franchise by saying “bee boo baah buuh beee booo bee” or screaming “whaaaaaaaaaa!” whenever something goes wrong, R2 somehow manages not be annoying; rather, in the increasingly ridiculous films, it eventually becomes one of the most likeable, and surrounded by wooden performances — human characters in the entire franchise.

With the release of Scream 4, this weekend we will surely see some debate about what are the best and worst Scream sequels. In the scheme of things, Scream only has four movies, which in a horror franchise is small potatoes – if a horror film works it usually gets a numbers of sequels and nowadays reboots (and sometimes sequels or prequels to those). For those that think this is something new, just look at the old Universal monster movies. They were made until the well ran dry and then they appeared with Abbot and Costello. But what’s the worst of the more recent sequel-crazy horror films? Take a look…

#5

The Franchise: Friday the 13th

Series Total: 11 Films, including one reboot

The Worst:

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Why:

Though the Friday the 13th series was fairly basic in terms of plotting – in that what normally happened was that teens would smoke pot, have sex, and get killed – the films can be satisfying in a low-rent sort of way. And though previous films could disappoint by being edited mercilessly by the MPAA, or have terrible acting (actually most did), or go too supernatural, the thing that makes Jason Takes Manhattan worse than Jason Goes to Hell (the closest competitor) is that the title promises an awesome movie. Jason Vorhees, wandering around the streets of New York, perhaps going into a 42nd street grind house that would play one of his films, that sounds like a kick ass flick. Instead, the film spends more than half its time not in Manhattan (on a boat), and when Jason does hit the big city, it’s mostly Vancouver, Canada substituting for the Big Apple. Like Bart Simpson and friends sneaking in to see Naked Lunch, this was a terrible mislead. Make no mistake, Jason Goes to Hell is pretty bad, but it was done a couple years after the fact and by a different studio. It’s bad but not disappointingly so.

#4

The Franchise: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Series Total: 6 Films, including a remake and a prequel to the remake.

The Worst:

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

Why:

The first two Chainsaw movies were made by Tobe Hooper. The first is an indisputable masterpiece that had influence over both Stanley Kubrick and Ridley Scott. The second film is a fascinating mess of a movie that is charming but was in theaters less than two months after principle photography was completed. The third film was chopped to bits by the MPAA, and the fourth film was basically a remake of the first (but with Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey). The remake lacked the brilliance of the first and yet managed to be effective just the same. The reason why the sequel to the remake is the worst of the lot is because it’s a prequel. Not only is going through the motions (which pretty much all but the first two were), it has the unenviable task of not having a satisfying ending. And at the end of the day, who wants their monsters explained to them? The reason why the demented cannibalistic hillbillies in the first couple films are terrifying isn’t because of the economic crises that may have led them to dine on human flesh. What’s scary about them is precisely that we know nothing about them. The problem is that this film does a horrible job of mythologizing. It’s insulting that it wants to tell us how Leatherface came to be Leatherface, but then when he finally does pick up a chainsaw, it’s just sorta there. Woo-wee.

#3

The Franchise: Nightmare on Elm St.

Series Total: 8 Films, including a remake.

The Worst:

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

Why:

Arguably the remake is the worst film of the lot, but it isn’t exactly a sequel. The problem with Nightmare 4 is that by this point the filmmakers and cast had embraced the fact that Robert Englund’s Freddy Kruger – with his over-exposure at that point – was no longer scary. So instead of making a horror film, in the fourth film Freddy shows up like a comedian to deliver bon-mots before he kills the secondary cast members. Though the next two films were not much better, this was the straw that broke Freddy’s back and turned him into James Bond (by director Renny Harlin’s own admission), and then turned each kill and their make-up effects into the only reason to watch the film. This is doubly disappointing because the second film is interesting (if terribly flawed), while the third film got the series back on track (and may be on par with the first in terms of quality). The fourth film may have been the only direction left to go, but down is not that much fun to watch.

#2

The Franchise: Halloween

Series Total: 10 Films, including a remake, and a sequel to the remake.

The Worst:

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

Why:

Most of the big 1980′s slasher icons were spared the Scream treatment. This is partly because they had worn out their welcome, and/or were seen as old hat. But Scream did lead to Halloween H20 (probably because Miramax owned the franchise), which brought back Jamie Lee Curtis as a mother trying to protect her son from the loosed Michael Myers. The film was played serious, but more than winked at its predecessors and the genre itself, and for the most part (at least at the time) was harmless fun. The follow-up became more invested in modern times, with Busta Rhymes acting as a TV show producer trying to create an internet reality show that leads to Blair Witch ripping-off. Though it’s hard to argue the fifth or sixth film are much better, they do not feature a character using karate on Michael Myers and living to see the next day. It also killed off Laurie Strode in the pre-credit sequence. F this movie.

#1

The Franchise: Alien

Series Total: 4 Films, and one upcoming sort of prequel

The Worst:

Alien: Resurrection (1997)

Why:

Other than Friday the 13th (which peaked with its fourth or sixth entry), every film on this list starts with the best film of the franchise, and like those other three, Alien is the sort of film that not only terrified audiences, but inspired film makers and inspired others to want to be filmmakers. As we will be seeing this weekend, with a lot of fourth films in four-film series there’s an audience who think the worst is the third film, and those who see a progressive downhill slide. But where the third film in the Alien franchise is inarguably flawed, David Fincher brought a singular vision to the material that was somehwat undone by having a bunch of same-y looking bald guys running around sewer tunnels in the third act. But his vision of despair is a complete thought. The problem with the fourth film is that between Joss Wheadon’s script and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s direction, the film wants to be anything but a horror film, even if it runs through the motions of the Ten Little Indians-style killing off of supporting cast. The most horrific thing about the movie is saved for the final act, when there’s a half-human, half-alien creature that strikes a note of terror more in being a mutant bastard. Whatever the film wants to be is totally at odds with the whole, and while it tries to deliver more familiar notes than Alien 3, in doing so it becomes the least interesting of the lot. Like Scream 4, or which ever “return to form” sequel you can think of, the apology tour ends up needing an apology tour of its own.

Note:

To be fair, there’s other horror franchises, from the Night of the Living Dead films, to Chucky, to Saw to Paranormal Activity that could easily make this list. As for the Saw films, the author must note he’s only seen the first. Some things…

Over the past year we’ve been wondering when Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox would finally announce the lead for his Alien prequel Prometheus. Well, the wait is finally over! The director and the studio have confirmed that Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) has landed the lead in the film, which is loosely based on the Alien mythology.

What started off as a straight prequel evolved into something more according to Scott, who came up with the idea for Prometheus. He and Damon Lindelof eventually transformed his first premise into something “more original.” The story will go into a different direction, but will still contain some Alien elements that will be familiar to fans. No plot details have been revealed as of yet but Scott did have this to say about his latest venture:

“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”

After months of casting rumors, Rapace will star as the lead character Elizabeth Shaw. She’s currently the first and only person signed on for the film. Fox is on the look out to fill the rest of the roles, specifically the other female lead (Vickers), which Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are reportedly circling.

We’re relieved that they’re going in this direction. A prequel would have been a heavy burden to carry and we’re not sure if they would have been able to pull it off. There’s nothing wrong with little hints of Alien here and there, but another sequel, prequel, or spin-off would have been overkill. Smart move.

Prometheus is scheduled to hit theaters on March 9th, 2012.

What do you think of the Rapace as the star of the new film? Is she the right choice?

Can we just nail down a lead for the Alien prequel already? It seems that a new potential star appears in the news every week and this one is no different. According to a report from Bloody Disgusting, James Franco and Anne Hathaway have both been added to the list of candidates to star in the new Ridley Scott film. We can put them alongside the other 2,945 actors who are also rumored for the project.

The site claims that both actors are being looked at as potential leads in the 20th Century Fox prequel, which will have a screenplay written by Damon Lindelof. Not much is known about the plot of the film but we’ve heard that the story takes place a good 35 years before the first Alien. In other words, this one will be pre-Ellen Ripley.

Franco is one of the first male actors we’ve heard mentioned in the casting round up for the film. So far, it’s been all ladies attempting to fill the shoes that Sigourney Weaver left vacant. Does Anne Hathaway look tough enough to pick up where she left off? We don’t know. She’s a great dramatic and comedic actress, but has she ever done serious horror or action?

What do you think of Franco and Hathaway making the list for Alien?

Screenwriter Damon Lindelof (“Lost“) has turned in his script for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel, and the suits love it! They really, really love it! Coming from the heads of 20th Century Fox that’s not really saying much because they’ve let some pretty sh*tty movies slip through the cracks but we’re trying to stay positive. More on the plot and casting below…

According to Vulture, everyone who’s seen a copy of the script has been asked to sign nondisclosure agreements to ensure that the plot doesn’t get out. All we know is that the story takes place about 35 years prior to the original, and it doesn’t feature any big, expensive set pieces, which is one of the reasons the studio loved it so much. The budget that Scott proposed for the film is somewhere between $150 – $160 million.

The studio doesn’t have a major tentpole project in waiting to compete during the summer 2012 blockbuster season and this Alien prequel may be their only horse to put in the race. They are currently in search of the film’s female lead and have met with several actresses, with Natalie Portman being one of them. The actress has stepped down from multiple films over the past few weeks (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Gravity), which makes us think she’s clearing her schedule for something big.

Another contender is Swedish star Noomi Rapace who appeared in the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation as Lisbeth Salander. She’s slowly making her way up the ranks and becoming a serious threat to Hollywood’s leading actresses.

Who do you think should star in the new Alien?

Noomi Rapace continues her invasion of Hollywood with another potential project. A few weeks ago we learned that she was cast as the female lead in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2, now there’s word that she might be in the running for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel. The last time we checked Gemma Arterton was said to be a candidate, but if we had to choose between her and Rapace, we’d go with Rapace. She’s just looks more badass (see photo above).

According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott have had general meetings with several actresses for the lead in the prequel but no one has been nailed down. Sources claim that Rapace is a real possibility for the part, seeing that talks between her and the studio have been ongoing. She actually met with them prior to her casting in Sherlock Holmes 2

Other actresses said to be in the running for the film include Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish. We’re not sure what type of characterization they’re going for but if this woman is supposed to be a badass like Ripley, Rapace would be the best choice. Cornish has also had her fair share of strong roles, with the upcoming Sucker Punch being one of them. We haven’t had the opportunity to see Mulligan in anything horror or action oriented so this would be a first for her.

Who do you think should be cast in the role?

Over the weekend a report surfaced regarding Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel. According to Digital Spy, the director has his eye on Gemma Arterton to star as the female lead in the latest installment of the sci-fi series. Does this mean that her character will be a complete rip off of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley? We’re not sure but we do know that Scott was impressed by Arterton’s performance in The Disappearance of Alice Creed.

After seeing her work in Creed, Scott requested a meeting with Arterton regarding the lead in the next Alien. As you all know his casting of Weaver in the 1979 film kick-started her career and made her one of the few female action stars in Hollywood.

Will this lead to anything big? Who knows, but Arterton is no stranger to major tentpole films. She first caught our attention when she played a Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace, then Clash of the Titans, followed by Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. She’s becoming the go-to-girl for action films. At this point in her career, she’s played the side-piece long enough. It’s her time to shine.

Do you think Arterton has what it takes to play a bad ass alien killer?

Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel is still going strong over at Fox even though we haven’t heard anything about it in a while. The latest creative rumblings have “Lost” writer Damon Lindelof as a possible candidate to pen the screenplay for the film. The news comes from Deadline and according to the site Lindelof has already met with the director and they’ve been discussing possible stories for the film.

Mike Fleming has been told that Lindelof has already closed a deal with the studio to write the script for the film that they hope Scott will direct. He is in fact the one who helmed the original 1979 installment, which became a huge cult and commercial success. The issue with this story is that Lindelof could have met with the director about Alien or another free-standing sci-fi project. There’s been no confirmation regarding what direction their partnership will go in.

At the moment, Lindelof is hard at work with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci with the Star Trek 2 script. Nothing personal but I don’t trust Damon Lindelof — or Carlton Cuse. Yep, it’s going back to that crappy last season of “Lost.” It’s been a couple of months and the bitterness is still there. Hopefully it will subside sooner than later.

Do you think Lindelof should write the Alien prequel?

The last time Ridley Scott tried to explain the juicy details of his prequel to the 1979 classic, Alien, we all got a little confused. He mentioned that it was very difficult to put a year on Alien, but “if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior,” whatever that means. This time around, Mr. Scott was clearer when talking to MTV about ’Alien‘ prequel details. From the looks of the interview, this is the most Scott has said on the project — Screenplay, space Jockeys, and no Sigourney Weaver? These are the subjects being discussed thus far…

“As we speak, I’ve got a pile of pages next to me; it’s like the fourth draft. It’s a work in progress, but we’re not dreaming it up anymore. We know what the story is…It’s set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?’ The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer’s chair … Our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says “There’s been an explosion in his chest from the inside out — what was that?” I’m basically explaining who that Space Jockey — we call him the Space Jockey — I’m explaining who the space jockeys were … [The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.

After so many sequels and franchises after Alien, it’s hard to believe that even with said plot, Alien will be as good as the classic. However, to add some more credibility to this prequel Scott has said that he will consult the original alien designer H.R. Giger. Mr. Scott is hoping for a late 2011, early 2012 release date. Meanwhile, we all have Robin Hood to forward to.

What do you think of the Alien prequel details?

Who hasn’t tried to re-do the chest-bursting scene in Ridley Soctt’s sci-fi horror film, Alien? It has become so infamous that people have created spoof after spoof, one trying to out “burst” the other. One of the funniest has to be the one in the comedy Spaceballs. The idea of having an alien creature grow inside your body and then all of a sudden rip out of your chest is horrifying to most.

However, to some it is a way to express creativity. Unrealitymag has gathered a gallery of photos showing those people who have taken the later approach and have re-created the infamous scene. People went their own special unique way and came up with some interesting interpretations of the scene.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien film which categorically will be a prequel, not a sequel. If that wasn’t monumental enough we’ve got some new info that claims the film will be released in 3D, which can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective.

Over at the UK website Shadow Locked, they released the latest Alien news via an interview with art director Roger Christian. They asked him about the creative direction Scott was looking to take for the next film. He went on to leak info about a the movie being in 3D as well as…brace yourselves, a possible prequel trilogy! We might have another three Alien films on our hands that will take place before the events in the original. Will it be like the second Star Wars Trilogy? God, I hope not.

Here’s what Christian had to say, “Ridley’s doing the next Alien in 3D. Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there’s ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I’m hoping he’ll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it – everybody.”

Christian did confirm that he and Scott had a meeting but gave no official word on whether or not he’d be working on the new movie. I loved the original Alien series, wait back up, I loved the first three definitely not counting Alien vs. Predator. But I’m not sure if I want to see another trilogy. We don’t necessarily even need the prequel so to make another three would be pushing it.

Do you think there’s enough Alien story to cover a new trilogy? Do you think they should make a 3D prequel?

Ridley Scott is aware that sci-fi fans everywhere are dying to know what’s going to happen with the pending prequel to Alien. The last time we heard, both he and brother Tony Scott were going to produce the film via their Scott Free banner, and were actively looking for a director. Some people even stated that Ridley himself might once again step into the director’s chair. Over at Empire, they caught up with the man in question to discuss what’s really going with Alien.

Scott declared that the next Alien film will be a whole new ball game in terms of anything we’ve seen before in the series.

“It’s a brand new box of tricks,” said Sir Ridley. “We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.”

I’m confused already. Here we go with the time line stuff, which always causes some confusion when doing a prequel within a well established franchise. It almost seems out of character for someone of his caliber to return to something that’s been through so many hands over the past 30 years. What made him come back?

“I never thought I’d look forward to a sequel,” said Sir Ridley. “But a prequel is kind of interesting. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

There you have it. Turn a “s” to a “pr” and you can get Scott on board with anything.

What do you think about the time line for the Alien prequel?
