American Film Institute otherwise known as AFI has officially announced their top ten movies and TV programs for this years 2010 AFI AWARDS. Every year AFI celebrates the most outstanding achievements in film, television, and other forms of the moving image arts. They consider themselves… “the only recognition that honors the community’s creative ensembles as a whole, acknowledging the collaborative nature of the art form. Honorees are selected based on works which best advance the art of the moving image; enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form; inspire audiences and artists alike; and/or make a mark on American society.”

AFI Fest Coming Soon: The AFI Film Festival

It’s coming.. From November 4 through 11 the AFI takes over Hollywood with what is traditionally a fine selection of movies from around the world. Big names from the international festival circuit appear alongside less-heralded movies diligently sought out by the programming team, with plentiful US premieres. The festival is under new management this year, but the programme remains as intriguing as ever and best of all, like last year’s flagship initiative, all of the tickets are free. Yes, free. They go on offer to the general public on October 28 (27 for AFI members) so get ready.

AFI Fest 2010 AFI Announces Dates and Asks for Entries

Los Angeles’ longest running International Film Festival, AFI fest, announces its 2010 dates and asks for film entries for their 24th annual event. The American Film Institute’s event which will be held November 4 until the 11th will take place at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the MANN Chinese in Hollywood, as well as the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Today, it’s been awards central with honors being announced by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics, and the New York Film Critics Online. Following in their footsteps is the American Film Insititute who have announced their Top Ten Films of 2009. The list includes two war dramas, two animated features, and even a bachelor comedy filled with toilet humor. AFI also went on to name their top television picks, which included a few surprises spanning from a vampire drama to a popular geek comedy.

Today we are on the eve of something momentous, and it extends beyond the next four years. Politics have strip mined the social conscience of the nation, revealing a fault line. The actual phrases spoken are circumstantial. Somewhere, somehow a cross-section of people took the talking points as matters of race. These people do not represent America, but they are continuing a discussion that concerns all Americans. Tonight AFI Fest is presenting a film that is very relevant considering the course and tenor that discussion is taking.

SKIN, by first-time director Anthony Fabian, tells the true story of Sandra Laing (played by Sophie Okonedo), a woman of mixed race born to white Afrikaner parents during Apartheid in 1955.
