The hit musical Rock of Ages took many of the kitschy but lovably sincere rock anthems of the 1980′s and Broadway-ized them. So who better to head up the film adaptation than Adam Shankman, who gave Hairspray a similar stage-to-screen treatment? The film – which stars Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand and Malin Ackerman – hits theaters June 1, 2012, but now there’s a trailer. One of the greatest books on film is easily Julie Salamon’s The Devil’s Candy, which chronicled every bad turn Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Bonfire of the Vanities took. At this point, one hopes there’s an author on set of Men in Black III, as there’s undoubtedly a great story to be told about its production. Having hired a new writer mid-shoot, and having delayed production again recently, the film took another hit when Alec Baldwin told Vulture Monday he had to drop out, but was moving on to the Adam Shankman-directed, Tom Cruise-starring musical Rock of Ages.

The queen of hip hop and R&B Mary J. Blige is ready to take her vocal talent to the big screen. The award winning singer is in negotiations to star in Adam Shankman’s big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages according to Variety. Shankman will not only direct but he’ll also choreograph the entire film similar to what he did for his revamp of Hairspray.

The director of the Hairspray remake will take on the musical Rock of Ages. According to Variety, Adam Shankman is ready for some edgier material and has signed on to helm the screen version of the Broadway play for New Line Cinema. This will be a return to some 80′s rock roots for the director who’s had his fair share of experience during the hair metal era.
