Taylor Lautner Joins ‘Grown Ups 2,’ Will Officially Make It The Worst Film Ever

Now that we know that Adam Sandler is giving one of his most reviled films—Grown Ups—the sequel treatment with the cleverly titled Grown Ups 2, the big question on the tip of everyone’s tongues is one and the same. No, no “how can the world be so cruel and unfair as to unleash this horror upon us?” Rather, it is “which Twilight star known for wooden and stilted acting could be added to the hilarity and hijinks of Grown Ups 2?” And your answer, America, is Taylor Lautner.

That’s right, the Mini-Me version of circa-All The Right Moves Tom Cruise will be joining returning cast members Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Maya Rudolph and Salma Hayek. So, just in case you were thinking that life or modern cinema couldn’t get any worse once Grown Ups 2 was announced, well, it kind of just got worse.

Lautner’s role is being described as “a fun turn which will have the young actor going toe-to-toe with Sandler in some fashion.” Or, as I call the role, “something I have to write about because Easter week is always a slow news week so now I have to fashion some kind of news item about a handsome non-actor scoring a role in the sequel to one of the more reviled comedic films of the past 10 years.”

Welcome to the ‘Hotel Transylvania’ Trailer

Adam Sandler may have taken a beating last year after the double-terrible of Just Go With It and Jack and Jill, and though he is still making Grown Ups 2, he may possibly be involved with something good again. And since Hotel Transylvania has a cast of Sandler ringers like Andy Samberg, Kevin James and David Spade, there’s hope for the film. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, check out the trailer for the animated film below.

Tartakovsky is probably best known for creating The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and working on the animated Clone Wars. And thankfully, Hotel Transylvania wasn’t written by Sandler and his friends – who are usually signs that the film is going to be a lazy, hackneyed chance for Sandler and company to get paid.

The trailer sets up the premise and isn’t that funny – though there’s visual wit in some of the gags (I like the monster who makes itself into the shape of a tree). It also looks great; Tartakovsky’s not trying to look like Pixar or DreamWorks animation here. ‘Spooky kid’s films’ will be big this fall, as this movie joins Paranorman and Frankenweenie in what amounts to a crowded Halloween season of creepy children’s films. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these movies changes dates, but perhaps the subject matter is still good for home video. Some kids just love the slightly macabre – as the continued popularity of The Nightmare Before Christmas shows. The film opens September 21.

2012 Razzie Nominations Announced; Adam Sandler Breaks Record With 11 Noms

Now that the Academy Awards are over, we can get down to the only cinema awards that matter—The Razzies. That’s right, The Razzies, given out to the worst achievements in cinema over the past year. And, as will come as a surprise to exactly no one, Adam Sandler scored a record-shattering 11 nominations this year, more than twice the amount of previous record holder Eddie Murphy.

The reason for Sandler’s dubious coup is due to his involvement in three horrid films over the past year: Jack & Jill, Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, and Just Go with It. Elsewhere, Nicolas Cage, Martin Lawrence, a Twilight film, Michael Bay and more all make their annual appearances.

So, will these Razzies record drive Sandler to reconsider his approach to film and star in better films along the lines of Punch-Drunk Love (hell, we’d even take another Happy Gilmore at this point)? Never mind, don’t answer that. I think we all know the answer. Check out the full Razzie noms below.

Grown Ups 2 is Officially a Go

Grown Ups, the Adam Sandler-starring vehicle which reunited him with friends Kevin James, Rob Schnieder, Chris Rock and David Spade made a lot of money. $162 Million, point of fact, making it the second highest grossing Sandler film, just about two million shy of Big Daddy. Which is exactly why Sony has greenlit a sequel, and it’s now expected to hit theaters July 12, 2013. Aren’t we lucky.

Part of the film’s success had to do with bringing Sandler together with his friends, as Kevin James and Chris Rock also have respectable audiences, and getting that Saturday Night Live flavor back by bringing Spade and Schnieder into the mix. The film was mercilessly panned by critics, netting a 10% approval rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. That didn’t stop audiences though, as the film played strong throughout the summer of 2010.

Sandler is back on writing duties with Fred Wolf, who wrote the first film, though many would suggest calling it writing was an exaggeration. Sandler’s most recent film, Jack and Jill, was something of an underperformer, as it didn’t hit $100 Million like many of his starring vehicles, so it’s likely that Sony (which has been home to Sandler for some time) wanted a sequel. Or perhaps he just likes hanging out with his friends.

Zookeeper: Movie Review

Last week we had talking robots saving the earth, now it’s time for talking animals, Kevin James and Adam Sandler style. Zookeeper is the story of a zookeeper who gets dumped for being, well, a zookeeper. He might be in love and out of luck with the girl of his dreams, but he’s great at his job and more importantly, the animals love him. The premise might not seem so enticing, but behind this wacky story there’s a voice cast of A-list comedians. Let’s see if they were able to make this live-action comedy work…

The Plot:

In Zookeeper, the animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes (James). Finding himself more comfortable with a lion than a lady, Griffin decides the only way to get a girl in his life is to leave the zoo and find a more glamorous job. The animals, in a panic, decide to break their time-honored code of silence and reveal their biggest secret – they can talk! To keep Griffin from leaving, they decide to teach him the rules of courtship, animal style.

The Good:

Bromance: It’s unreal to even picture a grown man and a giant gorilla sitting together at a T.G.I. Friday’s ordering BBQ ribs and 30 oranges, yes, but not in a goof comedy like Zookeeper. In the middle of a corny love story and live-action talking animals, there’s a bromance between a Zookeeper and a gorilla. Sounds ridiculous, but the conversations between these two friends make a grownups’ heart melt. This bromance is way better than the romance that drives Griffin to quit his dream job. We’re able to see the friendship develop and grow stronger and this makes us (the grownups) fall in love with the relationship itself. It’s unreal, yes but heartwarming at the same time.
Talking animals: If you take a good look at the credits, you’d be amazed by how much talent is behind the voices of the talking animals. We’ve got A-list comedians like Adam Sandler, Maya Rudolph, Judd Apatow, and Jon Favreau, along with superstars like Cher and Sylvester Stallone. Wow! Although the talents of said actors are better spent on other projects than Zookeeper, the talking animals were fun to watch and fun to hear.

The Bad:

Kevin James: James has come a long way from his days as the lovable husband on “The King of Queens.” With the help of Sandler, James has been able to get away with Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Grown Ups, and now, Zookeeper. I could say that James plays the part of a love-rejected zookeeper all wrong, but that’s not entirely true. He’s able to connect with a gorilla and make it enjoyable to watch. But what James fails to do is make us believe that beautiful woman like Leslie Bibb and Rosario Dawson would fall in love with him. He fails to be all-around funny. The slapstick comedy will get the kids to laugh, but what about grownups? He needs to trade the ‘I’m desperate. I don’t know what to do with my life’ act for something else, seriously.
Story: Yes, this is a love story. Guy gets rejected by dream girl (who happens to be blonde) for being a lowly zookeeper. Guy tries to get girl back by making her jealous, and ends up falling for the other girl. The end. Boring. Corny. You name it.

Overall:

Babe was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. The star of the show was a talking pig, and it was great. There’s nothing wrong with talking animals or love stories or bromances between gorillas and zookeepers, but when you have an annoying, unfunny lead, the movie isn’t going to be so great and that’s what happened here. There are a few good moments, but overall, Zookeeper should’ve been kept from audiences.

Rating: 3.5/10

New DVD Releases: True Grit, Just Go With It, Sanctum

The DVD picks are back after a Memorial Day holiday and what a week to return! Not only are we loaded down with a Best Picture nominee and a comedy semi-smash, but TV on DVD is out in full force as well.

That’s right, we’re on both ends of the movie spectrum here as the prestigious True Grit becomes the final 2010 Best Picture nominee to make its journey to DVD on the same day that Adam Sandler’s Just Go With It is available to buy. Talk about counter-programming.

All that, plus just about every single cable show you’d ever want to watch and a movie that features Gordon Ramsay acting.

Feature Films

True Grit

Hollywood can really learn a lesson from this remake. The lesson doesn’t have anything to do with the actual end product of the remake, but rather the type of film that was remade and how remaking it was handled.

The lesson is simple: Don’t mess with perfection. If you’re going to remake a film you shouldn’t choose one that’s brilliant to begin with. Instead, you should take a look at a film with a solid premise with a fundamental flow in its execution that is easy to correct.

Take Ocean’s 11 as an example. The original Frank Sinatra version is as cheese-tastic as it gets with Sammy Davis, Jr. singing while driving a truck in front of a green screen and the rest of the film looking as if it was filmed during The Rat Pack’s downtime.

But the premise was good: A bunch of slick crooks robbing a casino. Gussy it up with some great dialogue and excellent production values and you have a modern classic.

True Grit follows a similar path. The first movie was horribly flawed. Glen Campbell did his best to torpedo it and it couldn’t overcome the Western trappings of the day. But it had something going for it: a great book as its source material.

So the Coen Brothers grab the rights to that book, base their film more heavily on the source material and voila, a massive hit that’s as brilliant as it was popular.

So here’s the remake lesson: Grab a flawed film with some name recognition with problems that are easily fixed. That’s how you make a great remake. And NOT by casting Taylor Lautner in a remake of The Godfather. (Don’t worry, that’s just a joke).

Just Go With It

Take a look at that picture to the right. Look at it. Study it. Drink it in. Realize that the scene showed in that picture appeared on about 187,000 TV spots for this movie. And that the commercials for this film drove enough people to the theater that this film made over $100 million at the box office.

And my only question is: why? Why are people going to see this movie. Why are people going to see an Adam Sandler film with a trailer that includes five awful jokes, a ridiculous premise that gives away the ending at the outset, and the aforepictured (new word, kids!) crotch hit.

Please. Somebody has to tell me what type of person sees all that and says to themselves, “Hey! That looks great. I can’t wait to see that!” I just want to meet one of these people if only to see what they look like.

I imagine they’re wearing a striped shirt and a beanie with a propeller on their head, but that’s just me.

“Breaking Bad″: Season 3

I was waiting for so long for this season to come out on DVD just because I wanted to write a capsule about whether or not “Mad Men” was my least favorite show on AMC.

I was all set to write about the fact that “Breaking Bad” is the clear standout on the channel. That its deep examination of what drives a person to evil and its showcase of the best acting you’ll see anywhere, including features, make it not only the best show on AMC, but the best drama on television, period.

I was so ready to talk about how “The Walking Dead” had a visual style unlike anything else on the small screen, and that its ability to create a completely unique world in just a few episodes while maintaining a focus on grand entertainment was both more difficult and more well-executed than anything “Mad Men” has done with its insistence on deliberate pacing.

I couldn’t wait to lament the demise of “Rubicon” and discuss how its patience and ability to create compelling characters without a need to make them flashy was a cut above “Mad Men”.

I was also ready to talk about “The Killing”. How, after four episodes its bleak and staid depiction of a teenager’s murder and how it impacts everybody associated with her was some of the most heart rending and compelling television I’d come across in a while.

But then, “The Killing” went so far off the rails with weird bottle episodes, circular plots and just being too long that I could no longer begin to make a case that “Mad Men” was my least favorite show on the network. And I was so upset – nothing would do me more pleasure than to dispel the common notion that every other show on television should grovel at the feet of “Mad Men”. But, alas, I can’t quite do it.

So breathe easy, hipsters. The one TV show you watch isn’t getting lapped by its entire network’s roster…yet.

Still, “Breaking Bad” is a superior show to “Mad Men” on every level and you should really buy Season 3 of “Breaking Bad” on DVD.

Adam Sandler, Justin Bieber To Rule Weekend Box Office.

With The Super Bowl over, movie goers head back to the theaters this weekend with a slew of new releases all clamoring to claim the top spot. Box Office Titan Adam Sandler attempts to claim the throne with his new romantic comedy Just Go With It, while teen heartthrob Justin Bieber tries to flex some box office muscle with his 3D music documentary Never Say Never. Channing Tatum’s The Eagle ,kid flick Gnomeo and Juliet, and last week’s winner The Roommate all attempt to get a piece of box office pie this weekend as well.

And Now For Our Predictions….

#1 Just Go With It

With the exceptions of Little Nicky and Punch Drunk Love, Adam Sandler has become one of the most reliable and bankable box office stars of the past 15 years. Sandlers films have almost become required to open in the range of $30-40M and almost always become $100M blockbusters. Just Go With It Co-Starring Jennifer Anistion should see similar results as the romantic comedy finds Adam Sandler in his comfort zone ala 50 First Dates and Mr.Deeds. With Valentines Day just around the corner, Just Go With It should find itself with an opening weekend a little north of those aforementioned films and claim the #1 spot this weekend

Our Prediction: $36-42 Opening Weekend Box Office.

#2 Never Say Never

Like The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus before him Justin Bieber attempts to find box office success with his new 3D music documentary Never Say Never. Recent teen heartthrobs/musical acts have seen varied success at the box office ranging from the success of Miley Cyrus’s The Best of Both Worlds,to the poor box office performance of The Jonas Brothers The 3D Concert Experience .Working in Bieber’s favor is Never Say Never’s marketing campaign which has found Bieber literally taking over the TV airwaves to promote his film to various demographics as evident by appearances on The Daily Show, SNL, and even a Super Bowl Commercial co-starring Ozzy Osbourne. Add in the higher prices for 3D tickets and Never Say Never should find itself with a solid opening weekend take and land at the # 2 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $26-32 Opening Weekend Box Office.

#3 Gnomeo & Juliet

Like Hoodwinked, Barnyard before it, Gnomeo & Juliet is another middle brow kid flick with the aims of recreating the box office success of Shrek. Gnomeo & Juliet is no Shrek, but with virtually no competition, Yogi Bear petering out of theaters, the Emily Blunt/Jason Statham voiced kid flick should open with modest success at the # 3 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $12M Opening Weekend Box Office.

#4 The Eagle

This other new big releases features Channing Tatum as he attempts to claim box office glory with The Action-Epic The Eagle. The Eagle comes across as a mix between Gladiator and Kingdom Of Heaven both Ridley Scott directed films which went on to find enormous- to modest success at the box office. Unlike those films, The Eagle find it’s self being dumped into theaters mid winter with only a modest theater size opening (2,150) , and a lackluster marketing campaign. The Eagle’s opening weekend box office should play out like another sand-sandals action epic the 13th warrior and open at the #4 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $10M Opening Weekend Box Office.

#5 No Strings Attached

With a larger then expected opening weekend, strong week to week holds, No Strings Attached has seen itself become the go to romantic comedy this winter. While Just Go With It should provide ample competition, couples not interested in seeing Adam Sandler yuck it up on the big screen will opt to take a chance with No Strings Attached this Valentines Day Weekend landing the film at # 5 spot.

#6 The Roommate

Adam Sandler To Receive Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

After years of working on television and in film Adam Sandler is finally getting his due. The comedian and actor will be awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame according to the Daily News. Sandler will receive the honor on Tuesday, and it will celebrate his career, which spans two decades and consists of films that have grossed $3 billion worldwide.

The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. in front of the W Hollywood Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. He will be presented with his star by Henry Winkler (“Happy Days”), who co-starred with Sandler in the 1998 hit The Waterboy. This event conveniently takes place just 10 days before the release of Sandler’s latest film, Just Go With It.

Sandler is following in the footsteps of Donald Sutherland who received his star a week ago, right before the release of his film The Mechanic. Is anyone else surprised that Sutherland got his star a year or two after his son Kiefer? Does that seem strange to anybody else? Sometimes the placement and the timing of the recipients don’t make sense to us.

Oscar Nominees To Rule The Box Office Weekend

This weekend Oscar nominated films, The King’s Speech, True Grit, and Black Swan will battle with last week’s box office winner, No Strings Attached, while new releases, The Rite and The Mechanic try to sneak their way into the top five….

And now for our box office predictions…

#1 The Rite

There was a time when Anthony Hopkins was a box office draw, and this month the actor is headlining the obligatory mid-winter horror/thriller. No matter how dull or unimpressive it might seem, the buzz for The Rite has increased over the past few days and it should be able to land at the #1 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $14-16M Opening Weekend Box Office.

# 2 No Strings Attached

Last weekend, No Strings Attached was able to capitalize on the lack of competition and the Golden Globe win from Best Actress Natalie Portman. This weekend should be no different as the lack of competition, an Oscar nomination, and no new romantic comedies in sight (until Adam Sandler’s, Just Go With It), means No Strings Attached should hold onto the #2 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $11-11.5M Weekend Box Office.

# 3 The King’s Speech

With 12 Oscar Nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and a remarkable box office hold last weekend, The King’s Speech should be able to keep the momentum going to land at the # 3 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $9 Weekend Box Office.

#4 The Mechanic

From Crank to The Transporter franchises, Jason Statham has developed a loyal fan base that has produced solid opening weekends.This weekend should be no different as the CBS Films release should open at the #4 spot .

With direct competition from The Mechanic, a somewhat decent hold last weekend, The Green Hornet should slip to the #5 spot.

Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg Join I Hate You Dad

The ghost of “Saturday Night Live” past will join forces with the present when Adam Sandler co-stars opposite Andy Samberg. Sandler appeared in the sketch comedy series in the mid-nineties and Samberg is currently a regular on the show. According to THR, the duo is set to appear in a movie together where they’ll play — wait for it…father and son. Dun! Dun! Dun!

The trade reports that Sandler and Samberg will star in the comedy I Hate You Dad, which centers on “a father who moves in on the eve of his son’s wedding and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be.” Sandler will play the father and Samberg, the son, which is an interesting dynamic for more than one reason. The most obvious being the mere 12 year age difference between the actors.

The film is currently in the development stages but the actors are attached, and Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will produce.

Even though it’s unbelievable that Sandler and Samberg would be father and son, they do look related and they have a lot in common. Also Hollywood is notorious for casting actors as parents when they’re young enough to play siblings instead. Do you remember Amy Poehler and Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls? What about Jenny McCarthy and Brittany Snow in John Tucker Must Die. And you don’t even want to know the extremes they go to on soap operas. Can you say two or three years?

Adam Sandler and Kevin James Reunite for Valet Boys

Apparently, Adam Sandler and Kevin James are the new tag team of comedy because they love working together. They’ve co-starred in several films including the recently released Grown Ups. According to EW, the duo will be at it again for a new comedy called Valet Boys. We should have seen this coming. It’s only a natural progression for James to go from being a mall cop to a valet.

Valet Boys is being developed by Sony and will center on two, valets who witness a murder and then “find themselves running for their lives.” The studio has Sandler and James in mind for the parts. James will also co-write the screenplay with Nick Bakay. Bakay previously wrote the James vehicles Paul Blart: Mall Cop, “The King of Queens,” and the upcoming Zookeeper.

We’ve never been able to understand the obsessive love for Kevin James. Even though Adam Sandler isn’t as great as he used to be, he had his moment in the nineties. He was pretty good. James on the other hand, is up for debate.

On another note, the title Valet Boys makes us think of this old “Mad TV” skit that aired during the first or second season of the show. It was about the rough lives of Los Angles valets. We wonder if Sandler and James’ movie will look like it? Take a look…

New DVD Releases: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Grown Ups, Californication

Last week, we had one new movie on DVD. This week, we have almost more than we can handles with everything from the big comic blockbuster that is Grown Ups to the microscopic indie of Love Ranch and all Scott Pilgrims in between.

Plus, there’s plenty of classic TV hitting DVD shelves including complete box sets of two of your favorite series along with a current Showtime hit you may need to catch up on.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Grown Ups

When Date Night and Death at a Funeral came out on DVD, I grouped them as a means of bemoaning the fact that we’ve still yet to experience a “comedy of the year”.

In that column, I mentioned that Scott Pilgrim’s bombing meant that we were still wide open for the crown, and I posited that Due Date may be in line to take a Meet the Parents-like late season claim on the throne.

Well, that didn’t happen. And now we’re stuck with no real contender for the title of Comedy of the year.

Yes, Scott Pilgrim, may have been the best comedy film of the year and Grown Ups the highest-grossing, but do either of these films really feel like they should share a mantle with the likes of The Hangover or Meet the Parents.

I doubt it. So the search wears on. Here’s hoping Love and Other Drugs has what it takes.

“Californication”: Season 3

I have one question to ask about this show: Is it any good?

I was totally on board with the first season. Loved Duchovny’s performance, loved the seedy LA exposure, loved the overall attitude of the series. And the first season finale really seemed like they didn’t think they were coming back.

Now we’ve finished season 3 and nothing makes a whole lot of sense any more. It’s like the series devolved into a cruel parody of the initial season – giving us more drinking, more nudity, but nothing redeeming.

So again, I ask the question:
