The gang’s all back together with some fresh blood for the fourth installment of the Scream franchise. So vets David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell have Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudson, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Marley Shelton and Nico Tortorella in the mix in the slasher/whodunnit franchise that helped bring horror back to the big screen. To know Whit Stillman is to love 90′s cinema. In 1990, his Metropolitan announced a dazzling (and Oscar-nominated) wit, and 1994′s Barcelona showed a man of certain interests and great talent. But after 1998′s Last Days of Disco, Stillman disappeared from cinema – only to pop his head up when his work was reisssued by the Criterion Collection. Word would surface now and again about what he was working on, but there was no movement until recently. He finally made a new film – Violet Wister’s Damsels in Distress - and Sony Pictures Classics will now be releasing it worldwide. The film stars Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody.

Are you in the mood for a sappy, ensemble dramedy about lost love and strained friendships? If so, you’re going to love The Romantics. The film puts an R-rated comedic spin on the buddy cop genre with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan starring as veteran NYPD officers attempting to track down some stolen baseball cards. Unfortunately, Smith was able to derive more entertainment from his recent Southwest-bashing tweets than he was from this feature film.

Jennifer’s Body is the sophomore feature film from Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody. It takes us into the world of teenage angst driven by sex, obsession, and mostly regret. The film is advertised as a dark comedy, that oozes sex appeal thanks to it’s leading lady, Transformers star Megan Fox. Jennifer’s Body capitalizes on old school horror thematics from the seventies and eighties to add a campy element to this contemporary tale.

Written and directed by Boa Yakin, Death In Love attempts to show three lives that are all destroyed through one horrific event. Starring Josh Lucas, Jacqueline Bisset and Lukas Haas, the story immediately combusts at the very beginning of the film, leaping into a series of one graphic sex scene after another. This films is supposed to be about family and how past actions can lead to horrible consequences; although I got lost in all the sex and too many story-lines. At times it felt more like a soft porno than a film and it made me wonder, “what the hell am I watching?”
Here’s the good, the bad, and the plot… Continue Reading
