New DVD Releases: The Karate Kid, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Splice

If you’re looking to revamp your DVD collection you’re in luck this week because two (kinda) new releases are available for purchase. The biggest titles are remakes (surprise!), one that features kid-friendly action and another that’s filled with gruesome horror. Get ready for The Karate Kid and A Nightmare on Elm Street. There are also a couple of smaller horror films hitting DVD such as the love it/hate it spectacle that is Splice and the vomit/vomit profusely oddity that is The Human Centipede set to scare.

Feature Films

A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Karate Kid

Last week I bemoaned how Hollywood continues to repeat itself with sequels. They’re always bigger, have more unnecessary stuff and do the same thing as every other sequels.

Now, with these two films, we get an example of a runaway success with a remake against one that fell flat.

And why did Elm Street come up short? Because it, like Iron Man 2, repeated the mistakes of other films that didn’t measure up. This time with remakes. Mostly that it didn’t really add anything new to the story – instead it optioned to tell an update, rebooted, or “edgier” version of that old tale. Sure, Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor, but that’s not enough when you give us little in the way of a fresh look.

Compare that to The Karate Kid which, while it kept nearly an identical plot, gave us a totally fresh perspective. It relocated the film to China, gave us some remarkable martial arts scenes, and most remarkably, took a small story and set it against a grand scope.

This was not a simple re-hash, not a simple money grab at the old title, the creators of this film expanded the story nicely to give us a brand new way to enjoy The Karate Kid. And if those remaking beloved movies would follow that formula (rather than the easy way out we saw with Elm Street and thousands of other remakes) they’ll enjoy more success.

So take the good with the bad and buy The Karate Kid on DVD or buy A Nightmare on Elm Street on DVD.

“Fred: The Movie”

This is something I have to know. I just have know. Because I don’t get it.

I don’t understand how somebody talking with a high-pitched voice became a phenomenon. I don’t understand how the jiggly camera in inane situations gets tens of millions of hits on YouTube. I can’t comprehend how those ludicrous clips launched a TV movie. And that the movie debuted to over 7 million viewers in the first airing.

So, please. Tell me I’m not crazy. Tell me I’m not alone in my disdain of this pop culture oddity:

A Nightmare on Elm Street Sequel in 3D?

After raking in over 32 million dollars last weekend are we really surprised that A Nightmare on Elm Street sequel is in our future? The production team behind the Freddy Krueger remake recently spoke to the folks over at Dread Central about a follow up to the movie and the possible addition of 3D.

At the official press junket for the film, producer Brad Fuller discussed about how much he’d love to do another Elm Street movie because he feels that “Freddy always has a story to tell.” This was his outlook BEFORE the film was crowned the box office champ so we know can only imagine what ideas are stirring in his head today.

As for the 3D trend that continues to suck the life out of every movie within a 3 month radius, Fuller’s not completely opposed to releasing a sequel in the format.

We think that 3D movies have to be designed and written as such. If Eric (Heisserer) and Wesley (Strick) came to us with a Nightmare sequel script that is for a 3D movie, we’d be fools not to make it. Using 3D for a Nightmare sequel has to work conceptually for us, though. I don’t want to shoehorn the story just so we can use 3D technology. I do really think this movie and the visual style would work well within a 3D environment, though, so you never know.

We’ll give Platinum Dunes 5 whole dollars if they stay away from 3D. Wasn’t Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare released in 3D back in 1991? This franchise reboot is supposed to be fresh and new yet it sounds like they’re treading old waters again. A Nightmare on Elm Street wasn’t horrible but it was nowhere near as great as the original (read our review) and 3D isn’t going to change that.

Weekend Box Office: Freddy Krueger Terrorizes The Competition

He came, he saw, he conquered the box office with the remake of the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. Samuel Bayer’s take on the Wes Craven gem debuted at number one this week with over $32 million (we smell a sequel), followed by DreamWorks little engine that could How to Train Your Dragon with $10 million. Besides Elm Street, the only other major new release was Summit’s Furry Vengeance and it came in 5th place with just under $7 million to no one’s surprise. The film didn’t exactly have box office success written all over it.

It looks like How to Train You Dragon and Clash of the Titans plan on staying in the top ten for a very long time. Both films have earned well over 100 million dollars and currently have sequels in the works. Let’s see if they can hold on for another week before being bumped off by Iron Man 2!

A Nightmare On Elm Street: Movie Review

The 1984 version of A Nightmare on Elm Street is considered a contemporary classic among horror fans. It’s the vehicle that made Robert Englund a cult star and brought us one of the most terrifying movie villains of all time. Even though the original has so much going for it Michael Bay and his production company Platinum Dunes decided to give it a face-lift (literally). But after watching the remake, we’ve realized that it was completely unnecessary…

The Plot:

Sticking to the premise of the original, the film follows Freddy Krueger as he’s hunted down by the parents of a small town and burned alive for his heinous crimes against children. As his final act of revenge he decides to continue his killing spree but inside the subconscious of kids where no one can save them.

The Good:

Jackie Earle Haley: Haley was the perfect actor to take over the reigns of Freddy Krueger from Robert Englund. He poured his heart and soul into this performance by giving the character a new voice and a scarier vibe. He has made this version of Freddy his own.
The Direction: Samuel Bayer made his feature directorial debut with this film and did an amazing job. His background as a rock music video director really came into play with some of the more dark and graphic scenes.
The Make Up: Freddy was given a new look that slightly altered the previous design. Instead of him having pizza face he looks like a genuine burn victim. He has scabs, sheer skin, and practically no eyelids. It’s a lot more realistic.

The Bad:

The Script: The dialogue in this movie was beyond cliche. Every line sounded like it was taken directly out of the previous Nightmare films. You constantly hear phrases like, “If you die in your sleep, you die in real life,” and “When I sleep I dream, If I dream I’m dead.” After we heard it the first time we got the point but the constant repetition makes it lose its meaning.
The Acting: With the exception of Haley, everyone else in this film was horrible, especially Katie Cassidy. It felt like everyone was phoning in their performances.
Nancy: She was the only character from the original (besides Krueger) who made an appearance in this film and she was nothing like the Nancy we saw in 1984. Rooney Mara’s version is more of a loner and kind of Gothic. They gave her a new last name, changed her mother, and got rid of her father. If they were going to alter the character that much, they shouldn’t have put her in the movie.

Overall:

A Nightmare on Elm Street makes a strong attempt to stand on its own two feet but ends up being a shadow of its former self. It depends too much on the original material. There are 5 or 6 scenes in this film taken directly out of the 1984 version. There are some genuine scares and Jackie Earle Haley is amazing but that’s not enough to make this a great movie. It’s very mediocre.

Rating: 6/10

A Nightmare on Elm Street debuts in theaters this Friday and Warner Bros has just released a new restricted clip from the film. It features Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger and Katie Cassidy as one of the many teenagers he’s out to get. From the looks of it Freddy is back in business, the business of killing. Take a look…

There are several things present in this scene that take us back to the good old days when A Nightmare on Elm Street was actually scary. We get to see the return of the 3 little girls jumping rope, while reciting Krueger’s unofficial theme song (1,2, Freddy’s coming for you…), and the clawed killer himself standing next to one of his favorite accessories, a chalkboard. We all know what happens when Freddy’s in a room with a chalkboard (cover your ears)!

New A Nightmare on Elm Street Dream Clip

Over at Yahoo, they’ve just released a new clip from this month’s highly anticipated horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street. It features Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger and Rooney Mara as his unsuspecting victim Nancy Thompson. This might be one of the few remakes out there actually worth your time because director Samuel Bayer went back to what made Freddy truly scary, that godforsaken boiler room! Take a look…

In the following clip, Nancy in wandering around a convenience store in the middle of the night searching for a friend. Unfortunately for her, she’s still in her pajamas and in the middle of a nightmare. Watch as Freddy brings her over to the dark side…

The vague line that’s blurred between the dream world and reality is shown in a way that we’ve never seen before in the previous films. Instead of there being cuts in between the two dimensions you get to see both characters in limbo, which is fun to watch.

This is such a pleasant surprise coming from Platinum Dunes because their horror films are usually garbage. Their production of The Unborn was unforgivable and after a year I still want my money back.

If you went to see Clash of the Titans last weekend you probably caught a glimpse of the latest trailer for A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s a remake of the 1984 film of the same name and is produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and directed by Samuel Bayer. Jackie Earle Haley takes over the lead role as the badly burned child killer Freddy Krueger and terrorizes a new group of unsuspecting teens. Check out the trailer..

The beginning of the trailer starts out like the previous one but don’t be fooled because plenty of new clips follow. One shot in particular features a girl falling from the ceiling onto her bed with a pool of blood behind her. It reminds me of the infamous scene in the original where Johnny Depp’s character Glen is swallowed by his bed and spit up into a volcano of blood. Perhaps this new scene is an homage? Watch it and let us know what you think.

MTV may have completely turned on their music television roots, but they’re re-enstating an old school marketing scheme. Remember back in the day when Freddy Krueger made his way across the station’s airwaves promoting his film and scaring the sh*t out of us in the process? He’s back, and this time it’s for the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street that hits theaters next month. Take a look as Freddy invades “America’s Best Dance Crew“…

There are 3 new TV spots for the film that will air on the MTV Network. They each feature new footage not shown in the theatrical trailer so keep a look out for anything that doesn’t look familiar. The original Nightmare on Elm Street was directed by horror legend Wes Craven and was released on November 16, 1984. The remake will drop on April 30th, and will star Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy, and Thomas Dekker as a group of suburban teens being haunted and killed in their sleep.

Creepy Nightmare on Elm Street Action Figures

A Nightmare on Elm Street is set to hit theaters on April 30th, and the marketing behind the film is in full force. We’ve recently discovered a few Freddy Krueger toys, which I’m assuming are geared towards an older crowd because these would terrify any normal kid. They feature several versions of Jackie Earle Haley’s character pre and post burn and there’s even an image that shows him on fire! Check out the creepy photos below…

The latest Freddy photos popped up on the Figures forum, and they are down right weird. We all know that Krueger was a child killer but there’s one toy in particular that screams pedophilia. There’s a set up of him and a little boy who I’m assuming comes attached with a particular Freddy set, which is gross.

A new poster has been released for Samuel Bayer’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and it features a full sized Freddy Krueger. In the other posters for the film we’ve only been exposed to a shadow of his face or his hand, but this time around we get to see his entire figure. It looks like the director and Platinum Dunes are really trying to tap into Freddy’s old school horror image, and it’s working.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Theatrical Trailer

Just as we promised, the new trailer for A Nightmare on Elm Street has been released! The teaser debuted months ago in September, and now we’ve got the theatrical version. It premiered over on MySpace this morning at exactly 12:01 AM, and it looks…interesting. Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) is back, but not in a campy-comedic way. He’s revisiting his horror roots…

A Nightmare on Elm Street is directed by Samuel Bayer and is produced by Brad Fuller and Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes. The film isn’t so much a remake as it is a reboot, because the main character shares the same name (Nancy) as the girl from the original but that’s about it. There’s no Glen or Tina, or Rod, just some new kids named Kris, Quentin, and Jesse.

Prepare yourself because the teaser made this film look great, but the “expansive” acting that I’m seeing in the theatrical version worries me. It starts off with Kellan Lutz (who at this point no longer looks like a teen), followed by Rooney Mara, and a slew of other young thespians whose acting is terrible! They’re all recounting their experiences with Freddy in their nightmares and it sounds like their reciting dialogue directly off the page.

The only genuine scare I saw, was at the end when a doctor was trying to put Nancy to sleep, and on an interesting side note, she was played by Judith Hoag who starred as April O’Neil in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

A Nightmare on Elm Street will debut in theaters on April 30, 2010.

A New Nightmare on Elm Street Poster

A new poster has been released for Samuel Bayer and Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film features Watchmen’s Jackie Earle Haley taking over the iconic role of child killer Freddy Krueger, and he’s gearing up to scare a new generation of fans. The film’s latest poster just debuted on MySpace and it features the character in his true form.

The original film was directed by horror legend Wes Craven and was released on November 16, 1984. The remake will drop on April 30th, and will star Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy, and Thomas Dekker as a group of suburban teens being haunted and killed in their sleep.

The new poster still manages to cover the majority of Haley’s face while in the Krueger makeup, and even though we’ve seen a few glimpses of it head on, he’s managed to keep it hidden. I think they want to save the big reveal for the film or maybe the new trailer. The next trailer is set to premiere on Thursday at 12:01 PST, but until then here’s a new poster to tide you over.
