Since exploding onto the big-screen in 1994 with  Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey has been in a fierce battle against his own image. Much like the late Peter Sellers, Carrey is a brilliant comic actor who seems almost slightly ashamed of his craft.  As a result, he has attempted to branch out into more dramatic, artsy fare in recent years, with middling results. Because of this, the announcement that Carrey had signed on for Dumb & Dumber 2 (only his second sequel) came as a pleasant surprise. Will the film mark the beginning of a comedic rebirth for Carrey?

I think Seven Pounds will take Yes Man. Although this looks like it’s merely a matter of who has more box office pull, with Will Smith in a drama and Jim Carrey in a comedy, Carrey automatically has the upper hand. But I think Smith can take him, even though the reports are saying otherwise. $10 says Seven Pounds wins. What do you think?

Here are the predicted numbers according to Box Office Report for this coming weekends grosses, totals, and changes since last weeks numbers…

Review: ‘Yes Man’ is like a Reguritated Joke

yesman08 12 17 Review: Yes Man is like a Reguritated Joke

It’s not that Yes Man is bad, it’s just not that good. The film felt very dated and not very honest. Remember earlier this decade when we got a slew of romantic/comedies that all felt the same no matter who was starring in it or who directed it? You knew that the star had some problem with their life, found a false solution, fell in love, kept that solution from the loved one and the climax was always the love interest finding out? You would always have to find out if they would stay together? Which they always did! We’ve moved on from that. Our comedy has evolved and this film hasn’t. Continue Reading

Movie Releases: Seven Pounds, The Wrestler, Yes Man…

sevenppounds08 12 17 Movie Releases: Seven Pounds, The Wrestler, Yes Man...

Finally we get The Wrestler in theaters. This film has more people saying good things about it than almost any other film coming out this year. In fact, aside from The Wrestler, everything coming out this week is good but has a better option. Seven Pounds is good, but not great, I would say The Wrestler, Doubt, or The Reader are much better picks, although I’m guessing that by shear Will Smith-power the film will make it to the top of the box office. Yes Man (review here) really isn’t as funny as it should be, do see Role Models or rent Hamlet 2 instead. I think Bolt is a better pick than The Tale of Despereaux. To be honest, I have not seen, nor heard anything about Nothing But the Truth, so it has escaped my cynicism for now!

YES MAN TRAILER: Flash Back to the Past!

yesmanme08 11 05 YES MAN TRAILER: Flash Back to the Past!

Ummm…are we back in 90′s? This looks like it should have come out right after Ace Ventura. Looks funny and… but didn’t Carrey move on from this? Or did The Number 23 really do that much harm? I think my problem is this film just looks like a comedy we’ve seen. With the new generation of Apatow comedies, I think people are starting to want something a little different. Although personally I love Jim Carrey (I can quote almost every single line from Ace Ventura), at this point I just wish I could see him in more films like Eternal Sunshine where we acts instead of over acting.

Here is the new trailer from the film Yes,Man out in theaters December 19th, 2008.

What do you think? Fun Jim Carrey romp? Or dated comedy? Check it out below…
