A forgotten summer comedy hits shelves this week with the release of Year One on DVD. Joining it is the classic 90s series “Ally McBeal” and a brand new edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
All that, plus more TV on DVD and the three worst DVDs of the week.
Who would have thought that Sandra Bullock still had that much pull at the box office? Maybe it’s Ryan Reynolds charisma that wrangled up the viewers? Whatever the case, The Proposal beat out the competition this weekend and nearly made back it’s entire budget in three days. I hope this doesn’t mean any kind of a sequel (please no!).
Year Oneon the other hand wasn’t so lucky. Not only did The Proposal kick it’s ass, but The Hangoverand Up gave it a little kick while it was down.
Sandra Bullock is back to her old winning ways playing the pushy boss Margaret Tate in Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy, The Proposal, with funny man Ryan Reynolds. Watch at your own risk. The other big movie opening this week is Harold Ramis’Year Onestarring Jack Black and Michael Cera. I would hate to be the big comedy movie that opens right after The Hangover but hopefully these two films can pull in some audiences. And if the names Woody Allen and Larry David mean anything to you, you should go see Allen’s new one starring David called Whatever Works. There are also a number of smaller picks if you’re interested including Dead Snow, Under Our Skin, End of the Line, and Irene in Time, all of which you can find more details for below…
When you take the comedic tone of Harold Ramis, the casting connections of Judd Apatow, and the backdrop of Mel Brook’s History of the World you get this weekend’s, Year One. In order to combat the box office champThe Hangoverand the romantic charm of The Proposal, Ramis and company are busting out the big guns. Led by the outlandishJack Blackand typically subdued Michael Cera, Year One attempts to take you back to where it all began one slapstick joke at a time.
This weekend will again be all laughs; There is not one, but two major comedies hitting the theaters, now the only question left for you to answer is which type of comedy do you prefer? Romance or slap-stick? The Proposal and Year One will be battling it out at the box office this weekend, but who will be the winner?
Let’s take a look at the stats and our pick below…
The MPAA board has really been sticking it to filmmakers when it comes to content. It’s been well publicized that McG, director of Terminator Salvation has been rallying to keep a lot of his film’s footage uncut, at the dismay of 20th Century Fox. They want a PG-13 rated film, and he wants an R.
While the jury is still out on that one, the upcoming Harold Ramis comedy Year Onehas been having it’s own rating woes. Last week the film was branded with an R, which led to an appeal by Ramis and producer Judd Apatow. They did eventually get the PG-13 rating they wanted, but it wasn’t for free.
I mean, we all knowJack Blackhas it in him to lead a comedy and Michael Cera is good in everything he’s in. Put them in a biblical comedic piece with a supporting cast that includes Paul Rudd and David Cross as Cain and Able and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Isaac, with a screenplay by Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day), Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office”), and Lee Eisenberg (“The Office”), and it’s hard not to fail.
There’s no doubt that Year One is going to be a pretty amazing film. The fact that they have Paul Rudd as Abel is just too good. Although, I can’t help but to think that this is somewhat of a Life of Brian “remake” I’m still down to go and see it. Hell we could use from things that can stand up to Life of Brian.
