Though the holiday season tends to bring out some blockbusters, Christmas itself is a terrible day for movies. And this year, with Christmas Eve on a Saturday and Christmas on a Sunday, we’re not going to see strong weekend numbers from anyone. Something that’s going to repeat next weekend with New Year’s. Then again, it’s been a weak year, and last weekend proved it. This weekend we get The Adventures of Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in it’s non-Imax run, We Bought a Zoo, The Darkest Hour and War Horse going wide. Busy busy.

The 69th annual Golden Globes nominees have been announced, and this year they’re big on definite articles. The Help, The Artist and The Descendents lead the pack of nominees. Which is interesting because – if the Globes have a weakness – it’s that they chase the famous names, and these noms aren’t that celeb-heavy. Then again, George Clooney has received three nominations directly (for actor, writing and directing) between The Ides of March and Descendents, and surely a fourth for producing March. This Fall has been modest in comparison to many other recent years, in terms of major film releases. On paper there were a number of films that could have been $100 Million plus titles, but only Breaking Dawn has done blockbuster business, and has remained on top of the box office for three weeks. That’s going to change with the release of New Year’s Eve. Still, it’s been a slow, slow Fall.

Steven Spielberg‘s latest film War Horse is already considered an Oscar contender even though no one (outside of its makers) have seen it. Once you see the trailer, you’ll know why. Set in World War I, it tells the story of a boy (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse, with the horse shipped off to war, only for the boy to chase after it. Some have called it Saving Mr. Ed, but with Spielberg’s touch it looks to be a powerhouse. Check out the trailer…

Just in time for a Christmas 2011 release, the trailer for a film about a young man and his beloved best friend, a horse. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is Mr. Ed: The Motion Picture and it will drop this holiday season.
