NEW FEATURE FILMS
W.
Starring: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, Richard Dreyfuss, James Cromwell and Jeffrey Wright
This is a movie that a lot of people skipped. Probably because they were worried that Oliver Stone would give some sort of ultra-biased conspiratorial expose of the President, that many were sick of at that point. The film couldn’t be more the opposite. In fact, it’s barely a movie at all – it’s simply a collection of scenes from Bush’s presidency with no sort of bias whatsoever – sort of an acted-out documentary. Yes there is an attempt to explore Bush’s daddy issues, but really this movie is nothing more than a docudrama.

With America’s most epic election to date approaching so rapidly, and at least two major political films (W. and Body of Lies), hitting theatres this month, why are movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua blowing up the box office? That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, currently standing at number two in the week’s top ten, Chihuahua made $8 million more in it’s third week than W. did in it’s opening weekend. Ouch. Are singing dogs really that endearing? Or would the majority of the American movie-going audience rather keep politics and entertainment in separate ballparks?

I think critics should have to state what political party they belong to before submitting a review. Although there is NOTHING ethical about that and a critic or an audience member should be able enjoy a good movie with or without agreeing with it. BUT it does seem like reviews are being effected by which side of the coin you’re on. I think they best way to settle this is to see for yourself. But here is a little round-up of what people think about W. so far. Hell so far the reviews for the film are way better than most of the things written about the President (but that’s not hard to do.)
- WSJ: Oliver Stone goes for the juggler vein in “W.,” an exuberant account of the life and times of George W. Bush. He juggles genial mockery and moist empathy without venturing any judgments on his hero’s presidency.

Looks like it’s a pretty good weekend to go to the movies. Oliver Stone’s film W. is coming out just weeks before the election. I’m sure everyone will be talking about it, seems like no matter what this film will stir up some controversy. Always fun. Max Payne is the end of summer video game, gone movie with a ton of actions sequences hopefully held together by a comprehendable plot, but we’ll see! The Secret Lives of Bees has been getting a lot of buzz (pun intended), it will either be a sappy crier or just sappy. Bring your tissues and hope for the best. Morning Light is a good documentary, it’s only problems is that it has a limited release and it hard to find. As for, Sex Drive, the name says it all. Teenager with an overactive sex drive trying to hump his Internet girlfriend. What Just Happened? is good if you’re going for drinks after and if you live in LA. If you don’t, it’s a bit of an inside joke, but has it’s moment and tends to provoke interesting discussions.

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist: This one is for the indie kids who loved Juno. This soundtrack boasts some underground hits, such as Devendra’s “Lover,” The Jerk Offs’ “Screw the Man,” as well as Vampire Weekends’ “Ottoman.” Now you can have a new song to replace the inescapable repetition of The Moldy Peaches’ “Anyone Else But You.”
Released: September 23rd

I think this looks amazing. I can’t wait. Although I do think that this film coming out right before one of the biggest elections of our time is quite interesting. Do you think this will cause voters to be swayed one way to the other for the upcoming election? Will this build empathy for Bush? Or give more reasons to laugh and point? Or both?
I’m not sure what do you think?
Enjoy the new trailer after the jump!
