This weekend was dominated by the Pixar animated film, Up. It debuted at number one in theaters beating out Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell, and knocked last week’s champ Night at the Museum 2 down a peg. It turns out that Pixar’s not only good at creating quality family films, they also have a knack for hiding things in plain site. Over at /Film, Peter Sciretta did an amazing job of finding several hidden easter eggs featured in the film. They pay homage to past and future Pixar projects, and you’d be surprised as to what was found.

…a lot of money! Finally I agree with moviegoers. Although nearly every single film critic agreed that Up is an amazing, must see film, no one ever knows what the people will decide to buy a ticket to. This weekend, greatness prevailed, and Up took in almost $70 million and nearly bumped Obsessed off the list!
Another welcome surprise was the success of Sam Raimi‘s independent horror film Drag Me to Hell which managed to beat out Terminator!
There is a movie god! Check out the numbers below…

It is a slow week for movie go-er’s who have been spoiled with big blockbusters coming out every week (Terminator Salvation, Angels and Demons, Star Trek, etc). Nevertheless, taking quality over quantity, this week still delivers. Pete Docter‘s Up is a must see for anyone with a heart and a passion for an amazing visual experience. Another movie that has been receiving a lot of hype is Sam Raimi‘s old fashioned horror flick Drag me to Hell. Trust me, this film will not disappoint. And if you are looking for something different, you can turn to Academy Award winner for best foreign language film, Departures.
Here are the movies coming out for the week of May 29th:

Pete Docter‘s new Pixar/Disney 3-D animation Up is the most heartwarming, beautiful, and creative film of the year. From the colors and voices, to the plot and dialogue, this film is as close to perfection as any film can get. What I enjoyed about this film was how it was able to stir up such a wide range of emotions in viewers without it being manipulative.
In films, it’s hard not to role your eyes when the obligatory kiss, pat on the back, what have you, happens. Often times, the entire film has been building up to one moment and the pay-off ends up being lackluster. In Up, every single moment, every single shot is filled with something that you care about and entertains you, so when you get to the pay-off it’s just the cherry on top of an already marvelous Sunday. Yes, the film has a few (very few) predictable moments in it, but when done right, the predictable becomes important and better yet enjoyable.

It’s the battle between hell and heaven this week. Drag Me to Hell by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and Up will be battling it out at the box office this weekend, but which film is actually worth the time and money?
Drag Me to Hell and Up, both are at complete opposite ends of the ring. Drag Me to Hell is a horror film dealing with hell and creepy insects, and Up is a 3-D Disney/Pixar adventure about an old man who escaped into the sky with a lot of colorful balloons. So who will dominate the box office this weekend?

There is no doubt in my mind, Pete Docter is a genius. He has created the perfect film. Up is heartfelt, beautiful, entertaining, and absolutely hilarious. It’s the perfect combination of drama, comedy, and action. I think it’s safe to say that I may be his (and Dug the Dog’s) biggest fan, and I have no doubt that after this weekend you will be too.
Pete was busy up in San Francisco, but he took the time to talk over the phone to talk to a few journalists about his upcoming film. While talking to Pete, you see where his film get’s it’s heart and edge from, he is so humble and genuine, but he’s definitely a unique character himself.
Check out what he has to say about his upcoming film below…

What can I say, Up is my favorite movie of the year. It is the perfect blend of comedy, fantasy, and drama. As you can see from the photo above, the visuals are absolutely stunning. The simple arrangement of the 20,000 balloons is breath taking and magically cheerful. The movie will be here in a few weeks and this is the only film this year that I will say that you HAVE to go and see.

Anyone got any 3-D glasses laying around? It might be good to get them out, because MarketSaw just sent us a few photos of Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland and Pete Docter‘s Up in 3-D! Apparently, the UK is way ahead of the US because Total Film just released red and blue glasses with the publication of the photographs. Pretty cool huh? Sadly, I cannot virtually lend you glasses, but I can show you some of the scanned copied of the photos, which even without the glasses are pretty cool!

Finally! Pixar and Disney have finally released the featurette for Dug the Dog. As many of you have heard me mention in past Up posts, Dug the Dog is probably my favorite Pixar characters of all time. Although Kevin the Undiscovered Species still cracks me up, there’s just no topping Dug. He’s a talking dog (or rather a dog who has been given a collar that communicates his thoughts) and he is absolutely lovably hilarious. What I love about Dug is that they didn’t just turn him into a cartoon dog, he says things that you could imagine a chubby, not so bright, golden retriever saying.
I don’t want to spoil too much for you. Check out the Dug the Dog for yourself below…
