Sam Raimi‘s Oz, The Great and Powerful is casting up and Mila Kunis has now signed on, according to Variety. She’ll be joining James Franco, who’s starring as the titular wizard. The film is a prequel to the classic L. Frank Baum novel and film The Wizard of Oz, and Kunis will play Theodora, a young witch who’s rebuffed by Oz and turns wicked. To say that history repeats itself would be an understatement when it comes to filmmaking. Movies are remade every year, some of them classics, some of them cult favorites, and some of them that just shouldn’t be touched. The latter of that group includes Victor Fleming’s 1939 adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. According to Deadline, Warner Bros plans to remake the film and Back to the Future helmer Robert Zemeckis might direct!

It’s hard to believe but it’s been 71 years since Judy Garland clicked her ruby slippers together on the big screen for The Wizard of Oz when the film debuted on August 12, 1939. It was directed by Victor Fleming and won 2 out of 6 Oscars it was nominated for the following year. The film classic The Wizard of Oz based on the L. Frank Baum novel, has hit its 70th anniversary mark. In honor of the occasion, the film will make a return to the place where it all began, the movie theater. According to the Associated Press, this Wednesday, September 23rd fans will be able to experience the film on the big screen like they never have before.
The Wizard of Oz has an important place in history not just because of its box office success, but because of the effect it had on general public during the hardest economic crisis this country ever encountered.
