david hall the soloist The Soloist Review: Not As Good as it Could Be

The problem with The Soloist is that it tries to hard. It tries to show how important the story that it’s telling is. And the thing about the story is that it doesn’t have to try, it has everything it needed. They had the material they need, these are real people, this is a true story, so let’s see it! Instead something about it comes off as forced. The emotions in it don’t flow naturally (through no fault of the actors), which make it feel like the Director is trying to manipulate you into thinking that his movie is more important or deeper than it is.

Movie Releases: Obsessed, The Soloist, Earth, Tyson…

moviereleaseskj09 04 23 Movie Releases: Obsessed, The Soloist, Earth, Tyson...

There are a few movies that look pretty good this week. First off, Earth looks pretty amazing. Then again, I’m a total sucker for those space, ocean, and animal documentaries. The cinematography tends to be pretty epic, and I’m willing to bet that Disney will keep with that tradition. Plus for every ticket sold, a tree will be planted in critical regions. Yay! The other movie that looks pretty interesting is Tyson, the new documentary about Mike Tyson. The movie has gotten surprisingly good reviews. The Informers is a fun flashback to the coked out 80′s and you never know, The Soloist might be considered Oscar-worthy, might be worth checking out now.

Unfortunately, the rest is up to you, depending on what you’re willing to risk your money on.

Here are the movie releases for Friday, April 24:

The Soloist New Clips, Featurettes, and Photos

Last week as ShoWest I had the privilege of being able to screen The Soloist, I still however do not have the ability to review it. I will say that my first response to the film was that Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx, and Catherine Keener do a fantastic job in the film. All three of them have such dynamic and rich characters that could only be fully realized by three sophisticated and experienced actors.

It also helps that the have Joe Wright, a director known for creating painfully beautiful films about meaningful topics that pull at your heartstrings.

Check out videos from the film and featurettes and photos with the director, cast, crew, and the two people the story was based on, Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers below…

joewright Joe Wright to Direct Indian Summer

In a non-surprising move Joe Wright, the man who brought you Pride and Prejudice and Atonement wants to direct another European piece. According to Variety, Wright has signed on to direct Indian Summer. The film will be based on the novel of the same name written by Alex von Tunzelmann. The story focuses on “the last days of Britain’s colonial rule in India and the symbolic end of Blighty’s status as a world superpower.” Sounds like a fitting project for Mr. Wright. Find out more on the adaptation after the jump.
