While The Avengers cleared $178 Million internationally, stateside none of the new films made much of an impression. There are four films this weekend: The Five Year Engagement, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Raven and Safe. By next weekend, most will be dead. Such are the offerings before the summer season, films that are either meant to be counter-programming, or studio dumps that are being release partly out of contractual obligation. We have some good and bad news to report regarding the upcoming Edgar Allen Poe adaptation, The Raven. The film has lost a star in Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner, but has gained two in his place. According to THR, British thespians Luke Evans (he’s been in everything lately) and Alice Eve are in talks to join the cast led by John Cusack.
John Cusack is about to go from making us laugh in Hot Tub Time Machine, to depressing the hell out of us as a paranoid author. According to the actor’s official Twitter page, he’s landed the role of Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue’s adaptation of The Raven. The film will be a thriller (duh) based on the poem of the same name that centered on one man’s decent into madness.
Here in the States people are still reeling over the casting of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in the American adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. But what about the young actress who started it all? Noomi Rapace, who plays the character in the Swedish-language film has been receiving a lot of positive buzz for her performance, enough so that a possible Oscar nomination might be in her future. Not only that but her new international acclaim could land her a role in several blockbusters like Sherlock Holmes 2 and Mission Impossible 4.
Jeremy Renner may be up for an Academy Award this year for his performance in the The Hurt Locker but his next project won’t be as high brow. The actor is rumored to be in talks for a role in Peter Berg’s big screen adaptation of Battleship. You may have thought that film died, but it’s still going strong and could gain this talented actor as its lead.
