If you’re looking to revamp your DVD collection you’re in luck this week because two (kinda) new releases are available for purchase. The biggest titles are remakes (surprise!), one that features kid-friendly action and another that’s filled with gruesome horror. Get ready for The Karate Kid and A Nightmare on Elm Street. There are also a couple of smaller horror films hitting DVD such as the love it/hate it spectacle that is Splice and the vomit/vomit profusely oddity that is The Human Centipede set to scare.

Shortly after the release of this summer’s The Karate Kid, Sony announced their plans for a sequel. The first film earned over $55 million its opening weekend and has accumulated a worldwide gross of almost $300 million. The studio wants to keep the momentum going by starting work on the follow up as soon as possible. According to THR, they’ve wasted no time in hiring two screenwriters to tackle Dre’s next journey.

Sony has wasted no time planning a sequel to last weekend’s The Karate Kid. The film topped the box office charts beating out another eighties revamp, The A-Team with over $55 million. Not only did it come in at number one but it left its competition in the dust with a good $30 million gap. The original Karate Kid had 4 films in its series and it looks like this version is about to follow in its footsteps…

With The Karate Kid opening number one this weekend Harald Zwart must be feeling pretty good about himself! The innocence and epic nature of the this remake seemed to be no match for the off-the-cuff comedic violence of The A-Team.
Zwart may be known in the US for The Pink Panther 2 and internationally for Long Flat Balls I and II, but he’s yearned for some time to do something less silly and humorous, and something more artistic and dare I say epic. He jumped at the chance to join the Smith family in “retelling” the classic story in a beautiful, new way.
Even before the release of the film, Zwart was confident that his film would be a success with viewers…

…And we’re talking the REAL win. Not only did The Karate Kid finally knock Shrek Forever After off it’s box office pedestal, but they only spent $40 million dollars and made $56 million, while their competition for the weekend The A-Team spent $110 and made only $26 million. Ouch! It seems like both The A-Team and The Losers (basically the same movie) were fun to watch but don’t seem to be pulling in the viewers. Maybe people went to one or the other and not both? I wonder if The Expendables (also basically the same movie just with more bulky men) has anything to be worried about?
As for the smaller films, Splice is the only one that made the list. Will it stick around with word of mouth? Or slide into the depths of the Top 100?

This weekend we’re headed back to the eighties with the release of Joe Carnahan’s adaptation of the hit TV series The A-Team, which stars Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copley and Rampage Jackson as a group of renegade soldiers running from the law. There’s also Harald Zwart’s Karate Kid remake that features Jaden Smith taking on the role of an abused kid who learns to defend himself with the help of his mentor Mr. Han (Jackie Chan).

With its adventurous scope and thrilling fight scenes, this film connects much more than it misses. Even if it overstays its welcome a little bit.
