When The Fighter was making the junket rounds, Mark Wahlberg joked about how there could be a series of films made about his real-life character Micky Ward’s fights with Arturo Gatti. He said “We’re doing those fights in the sequel. We’ll do four more films. We’ll do the first Gatti fight in the sequel” which led to director David O. Russell making a Rocky IV reference. It turns out this wasn’t just a jab at the beloved Sylvester Stallone franchise – Mark Wahlberg has recently commented to Entertainment Weekly that he’s into “taking one more run at it.”

It’s your first chance to catch up with the December Best Picture nominees this week as The Fighter hits DVD shelves, despite its still playing in a few hundred theaters around the country. So now you won’t have to search for an art-house or slough through the stale popcorn of a second-run theater to see one of the best films of the year.
It comes alongside two early fall releases that you may have forgotten about. One stars Jennifer Aniston, one is directed by Clint Eastwood. But, sadly, there is on Clint Eastwood-directed Jennifer Aniston film. That would really be a DVD worth getting.

Mark Wahlberg has a lot to be thankful for this year. The actor produced and starred in a film that received several Oscar nominations, and two wins for its stars Melissa Leo and Christian Bale. The Fighter was truly a labor of love for Wahlberg who championed for years to get it to the big screen. When all the stars aligned, he got it made, and it was a hit. This begs the question: are there more Mickey Ward stories on the horizon? Could The Fighter 2 be on the way?

Melissa Leo took home the award for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Golden Globes for her performance in David O. Russell’s The Fighter. She played Alice Ward, the crass, white-trash mother of Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund in the boxing drama. She also won in this same category at the Critics Choice Awards, which were held on Friday.
