1994′s The Crow was a box office success, and spawned a number of (mostly) direct to video sequels. But part of the appeal of that version was its gothic nature, enhanced by the tragedy of Brandon Lee dying during production. Whatever direction Juan Carlos Fresnadillo‘s remake is going, it doesn’t seem to embrace that original spirit. The Hollywood Reporter has received word that Bradley Cooper is out, and the two most likely replacements are Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum.

Look at this face? Do you see this guy listening to Bauhaus? Bradley Cooper comes off more as a Rush or Van Halen fan. Nothing against Rush or Van Halen. Probably some rap, really liked Pearl Jam. Pop music. You don’t suspect that this guy can do goth. You don’t suspect he was a regular at midnights of Rocky Horror Picture Show. But Cooper is supposedly circling The Crow reboot to be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cooper is an actor, so perhaps he’ll show some range.

Director of hyperactive zombies-but-not-really-zombies sequel 28 Weeks Later (the follow-up to 28 Days Later), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, is set to direct a reboot of The Crow, the 1994 comic book adaptation starring Brandon Lee as a murdered man who returns from the dead to avenge he and his fiancé’s murder (Lee himself was killed accidentally on-set when a gun stunt went wrong).

Do you remember when it was announced that Mark Wahlberg had been offered the title role in The Crow reboot? Most of us were in shock and couldn’t believe that the actor was given first dibs on the part. Not to say that Wahlberg is a bad actor because he’s better than some others we know, but he just didn’t seem like the right fit. Moving from Brandon Lee to Mark Wahlberg seems like a weird stretch of the imagination for the folks behind The Crow. According to Bloody Disgusting, the Oscar nominated actor has been offered the title role in the long awaited reboot. The project has been in development for a while and is currently being produced by Relativity Media, who sent out the offer to Wahlberg.

According to Variety, original Blade director Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct an updated version of The Crow. Based on the comic book by James O. Barr, a live action Crow adaptation was previously produced in 1994, and starred the late Brandon Lee in the title role.
