The 20-year-old actress and Save the Whales Again! Spokesperson (who, as captured in the Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove, surfed with several other protesters into the waters of Taiji, Japan in attempt to prevent the massacre of a group of dolphins before she and others were attacked by fishermen) returned to Taiji today to speak about the rampant killing of dolphins with the “mayor, city councilmen and Fisheries Union representatives,” according to E! Now that The Cove has debuted in theaters and its producers have won Oscars, no one in the whale industry is safe from persecution. Not only has the film become an Academy Award winning hit, but it will also appear as a television show on the Animal Planet entitled, “Dolphin Warriors“. The activism doesn’t stop there because according to a report from The New York Times, The Cove team recently orchestrated an undercover sting to bust a sushi restaurant in California that’s been selling illegal whale meat.

You all saw it! The Oscars don’t like activists promoting their own causes via posters in the middle of their award ceremony, but Rick O’Barry, the trouble-maker behind the now Academy Award winning documentary The Cove will stop at nothing to get his message across. The film was a success because the film-makers didn’t follow the rules, so why should anything change when they’re accepting an award? I only wish that we could have had a chance to hear what Louie Psihoyos had to say. In case you did catch it, his sign said…

The winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary goes to The Cove. Actor now producer Fisher Stevens did most of the talking thanking everyone involved including the director. Unfortunately we didn’t get to hear from the other two winners because the music began to play them off, which might have had something to do with them holding up a giant sign with a text number on it.
See who they beat out this year in the Best Documentary category…

The director of the controversial, yet poignant documentary The Cove has found himself in more hot water. Louie Psihoyos has been at odds with Japanese authorities ever since he filmed portions of his film in the country, that exposed the harsh treatment given to dolphins. According to the Associated Press, Psihoyos risks being arrested by Japanese officials if he decides to attend the The Cove premiere at this year’s Tokyo Film Festival.

If you’ve read my review of The Cove, than you know that I am a huge supporter of the film. In fact, I thought I was one of their biggest supporters, but I was wrong. I wasn’t quite dedicated enough to run around LA in a dolphin suit making small videos about why dolphins are awesome, but luckily the group Take Part was!
Check out one of the five funny videos the group put together to to help bring attention to The Cove in their own light-hearted and bad-ass way…
