One of the most refreshing new shows to hit the air this year comes from Showtime and it’s called “The Big C.” The “C” can stand for multiple things: Cathy, as in the show’s protagonist, cancer as in her illness, or comedy as in the way she chooses to confront the issue. Darlene Hunt is the show’s creator and a writer for the series, which features Oscar nominee Laura Linney in the lead role alongside an equally talented supporting cast.
“The Big C” sticks out among the onslaught of programs clogging up your TV schedule because of Hunt’s unique take and voice. She writes like no one else, and she isn’t afraid to take on something as serious and daunting as cancer and make it OK to laugh at. Not to diminish the struggle but to shed light on a different way that people can deal with it.

Really? “Weeds” is going to be around for another season? What is Showtime thinking? Even though we feel as if the series is past its prime the executives at the network disagree. According to Zap2it, both “Weeds” and the freshman dramedy “The Big C” have been renewed for another season.

After months of advertisements, Showtime’s latest controversial comedy “The Big C” premiered on Monday night. It was blessed with a lead-in by the already established “Weeds,” which kicked off season number 6. The show centers on the effects that cancer can have on a person’s body, their mind, their family, and their spirit. Laura Linney stars as Cathy, a woman who’s trying to deal with a deadly diagnosis, while getting her life back in order. Was it funny, was it sad, was it bad? Seems as if you want to get an all-star cast in line, just make a comedy about something no one wants to laugh at! Apatow has Rogen, Gordan-Levitt and Huston in I’m With Cancer and Showtime’s very similar TV show version of the film (I wonder which came first and which will work better?) attracted Oscar winners. Academy Award winning actress Laura Linney will be leading the way in the premiere tonight Showtimes upcoming series “The Big C” alongside the recently announced Oscar-nominated Gabourey Sidibe and the non-nominated but easy on the eyes Idris Elba.

Idris Elba has been making his rounds on the big screen with supporting parts in Obsessed, RocknRolla, and most recently The Losers. While awaiting the release of his new film Takers, he’s decided to return to his television roots.
