When you’ve got a picture opening the week after another film has had the biggest opening weekend of all time, well brother, you’re in for a hard road. Even if The Avengers falls 70% this weekend that would mean a little over $60 Million dollars. That’s a steep hurdle for Dark Shadows. Surely no one is expected the film to do Alice in Wonderland numbers, but Shadows appears to be caught in the wake.

He just had a smashing opening weekend at the box office with a little movie called The Avengers; and his horror film The Cabin in the Woods is being hailed as a ‘game changer.’ But despite the recent mainstream success, Whedon knows he could never have done it alone. After The Avengers hit us with a massive $207 million opening weekend (grossing a worldwide $700 million), it should be no surprise that Disney/Marvel has officially announced the obvious; a sequel is on the way.  Of course, we already knew a sequel would be on the way (Marvel rarely stops at just one, and its stars are all signed to multi-film contracts); this is simply the assurance of what we all knew would be happening.

If the box office is any indication (and it is), a lot of you enjoyed The Avengers this weekend.  And even though the record-breaking superhero film is already 2.5 hours long, fans are already clamoring for more.  While it’s a bit early for sequel news, director Joss Whedon is promising a three-hour director’s cut of The Avengers with 30 minutes of new footage… for the film’s Blu-Ray release.

After Friday’s reports of an $18.7 Million midnight, it didn’t look like The Avengers was going to break any records. And late Friday, studios were suggesting that the film was going to have a $65 Million Friday, which ended up being off by about $15 Million. And though it didn’t beat the midnight or opening day records, The Avengersdid have the biggest opening weekend of all time by a wide margin.

After four years, five films, and countless castings, The Avengers have finally assembled. The Avengers is here, and it’s the film Marvel has been planting the seeds for since Iron Man hits screens in 2008. In that time we’ve had films featuring Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to help get audiences in the mood and in the know about these characters. And knowing the characters is important for Joss Whedon’s film, because character development and – for the most part – motivation is kept to a minimum. You’ve got an all–star cast facing evil, and it all builds to a blockbuster conclusion. But too bad it’s such a rocky ride to get there.
