It’s a tough road for women in a super-hero movie. Few get to be more than love interests. But that’s not the case in James Gunn‘s Super. Ellen Page she gets to play the superhero sidekick, who’s way more trouble than expected. And for Liv Tyler, she gets to play not the love interest of Rainn Wilson‘s superhero Crimson Bolt, but his wife – who’s succumbed to addiction yet again and has left him for another man. Neither is waiting around to be saved, and that may have been what drew both to Super, which opens Friday in theaters and on VOD. We talked to both women about the film. Check it out.

Pow! Zap! Boom! Divorce dramedy! Ah yes, the old Hollywood staples…
Most films and comics are made to indulge fantasies, whether they be about super-powered revenge or undying romance. Super relishes this and throws it back in your face – with a laugh. So you want to be a hero? Well your homemade costume is gonna look like crap. Want to save your former lover? They may not want to be saved. Want to swing wrenches at wrong-doers’ heads? Well it’s gonna be messy, and they’re probably gonna cry. It shows how hilariously incompatible our fantasies are with reality, even when those fantasies are entered into with the most noble and heroic intentions.

Being a superhero ain’t easy according to Rainn Wilson. For one, the costumes suck. Rainn was talking about his latest film Super, which hits theaters and VOD Friday. The character James Gunn came up with for him is a slightly disturbed short-order cook, who loses his wife (Liv Tyler) to a scumbag and is told by God to become a superhero. It’s a strange film but Wilson was more than game to play his slightly off leading man, who gets a superhero side kick in Libby (Ellen Page) – a comic book fanatic more than happy to play along and forces her way into being his side kick and names herself “Bolty.” Check it out.

James Gunn started his career in 1996 writing Tromeo and Juliet for famous schlock impresario Lloyd Kaufman. Six years later he was writing the big screen Scooby-Doo, and ten years later he had written and directed Slither for Universal studios. Now, James Gunn has made Super, his “arthouse-grindhouse” film about Frank (Rainn Wilson) a short order cook who – when his wife leaves him for a drug dealer/bad guy – is told by God to become a superhero. It’s a weird movie, which is why he did it on the cheap. But it’s also a very personal movie for its writer/director, one that took nearly ten years to come to gestation.
