Out of all of the superhero/comic-book movies that have come out this summer, Green Lantern‘s debut has been the weakest. All three films Thor (opened to $66 million), X-Men: First Class (opened to $56 million) and now, Green Lantern placed at No. 1 during their opening weekend, but not each one seems to be making less than the last. Even with the extra boost in 3D ticket sales, Green Lantern wasn’t able to top its predecessors. Last weekend’s big attraction Super 8 slipped to second place, grossing $21.2 million. And Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the new Jim Carrey family comedy, came in at No. 3 with $18.2 million. Find out more below…

After last weekend’s solid debut J.J Abrams Super 8 will be competing with blockbuster hopeful The Green lantern, Jim Carrey’s kid comedy Mr.Poppers Penguin.
Hoping to be another in the long list of successful comic adaptation comes. The Green lantern is a known property, add in the youthful appeal of Ryan Reynolds, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively and The Green Lantern could turn out to be sizable hit. Working against Reynolds & Co are poor reviews, and the fact that The Green lantern is the third comic book film to be released over the past few weeks. Super 8 is the new No. 1 movie in America. The J.J. Abrams‘s sci-fi film topped the box office charts during its debut weekend by taking in a predictable $37 million. But the release of the Steven Spielberg flick, also brought films like last week’s winner X-Men: First Class and the record-breaking The Hangover Part II down… a considerable amount. X-Men: First Class in only its second week in theaters managed to come in second place, with $25 million, which is quite a drop from it’s opening weekend numbers (and more people should have seen it because it’s the better film!).

Though his career went through many iterations (he started writing scripts for films like Taking Care of Business, Regarding Henry and Gone Fishing), it was TV where J.J. Abrams found his groove. There he masterminded Felicity, Alias, and helped launch Lost. Then he returned to cinema with the semi-success Mission: Impossible: III, and then earned fanboy love for his resurrection of the Star Trek franchise – which made the franchise cooler than Star Wars. For Super 8, he teamed with Steven Spielberg to make a film meant to recall the glory days of Amblin productions. How did it turn out?

Though we’ll have a review next week, when a film is as shrouded in mystery as J.J. Abrams‘s Super 8, it’s worth giving a heads-up peak at the film. Reviews are now starting to pop on line, and the plot has finally become revealed. A group of kids are making a horror movie when a late night shoot leaves them a witness to a trainwreck, and on that train is an alien. The town is then put under military command, but the kids keep making their movie. What did we think? Check it out.. Continue Reading
