This week has an interesting line-up of films to see. First of all, Vin Diesel is back in all of his glory with Fast & Furious. Chances are it will be pretty dumb, yet ever so entertaining at the same time. Greg Mottola, the director of Superbad is back with another comedy, Adventureland, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart about a group of rejects forced to work a job at an amusement park during the 80′s. Score! Next on the list is Sugar; the story of a baseball player from the Dominican Republic who is pursuing his dream of playing baseball in the United States in hopes of creating a better life for his family. This is supposed to be a great movie.

Both written and directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson), Sugar follows the journey of Miguel Santos (Algenis Soto), a Dominican pitcher working towards a career in the big leagues and a quick way to pull his family out of poverty. After years of training at a Dominican recruiting academy, he’s finally drafted to a minor-league team in Iowa where he struggles to maintain his game, and to adjust to the impossibly foreign American culture.

I recently had the privilege of sitting down with filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, as well as the movies lead Algenis Soto for their upcoming film, Sugar. After breaking into the independent film scene with Boden and Flesck’s incredibly well-received film Half Nelson with Oscar-Nominated actor Ryan Gosling, they have come to impress audiences, yet again, with their ability to tell relatable, honest stories, in an enjoyable and interesting way.
