Check out all the news you missed over the weekend…

  • Brakes have been placed on Steven Soderbergh’s new movie about the career of former baseball phenom Billy Beane, titled Moneyball and starring Brad Pitt. According to Variety, Columbia Pictures had a change of heart after company topper Amy Pascal read the final script and didn’t like the new direction the filmmaker was going in. Soderbergh planned to use real former baseball players, Scott Hatteberg and David Justice in the movie. (Variety)
  • Start of your week with a laugh with 10 of the best clips of Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno. (unrealitymag)
  • Ms. Romantic Comedy is back! Sandra Bullock’s new movie, The Proposal opened at number one. It was Bullocks best opening ever with The Proposal grossing an estimated $34.1 million, proving the superstar still has what it takes to pull it off. The movie, produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, cost just $40 million to make. That’s a good investment if you ask me. (comingsoon)

Interview with Steven Soderbergh

steven soderbergh 09 5 22 Interview with Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh‘s new film, The Girlfriend Experience, is a testament to his abilities as a Director. The film is not necessarily a “good” film, but it is absolutely fascinating. Starring adult entertainment actress Sasha Gray, the film is unlike anything viewers are used to seeing in the theaters. It shows that a great Director can make a film worthwhile, without any stars, story, blocked scenes, or any of the other usual film-making conventions. Although the film walks the line of becoming an art project, it is entertaining and thought provoking, much like Soderbergh himself is in real life.

The press conference in which I interviewed him at, was rather odd. Aside from the fact that it was mixed with adult entertainment writers and us boring film journalists, there were only three people who were willing to ask Soderbergh questions (apparently they all just wanted to talk to Sasha). I on the other hand, was there for him, and was lucky enough to get to pick his brain for 45 minutes

The Girlfriend Experience Trailer and Response

thegirlfriendexperience09 4 15 The Girlfriend Experience Trailer and Response

I just got out of a screening for Oscar winning Director Steven Soderbergh’s latest film The Girlfriend Experience and the trailer appeared online! How perfect. The film is about the life of a high class escort played by adult-entertainment star Sasha Grey.

Thanks to Soderbergh and writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien this was one of the most thought provoking films I’ve seen in a long time. Without using a “real actor” as the focus of the film, Soderbergh is able to evoke a more realistic perspective on a world where people are trying to live their fantasies. The film allows the audience to connect to the characters through a great story, a fascinating source material, interesting shots, and crafty edits, not because of the acting like we are used to.

Grey, is obviously not an actress, and yet she is absolutely mesmerizing in the film for her progressive and yet extremely walled up perspective on life, money, love, and the world around her.

hugh and catherine1 Cast Update: Cleopatra

E! Online is reporting that everyone’s favorite sultry cat eyed beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones, 39 is up for the role of Cleopatra in the Steven Soderberg remake of a movie of the same name.  She won an Oscar for her role as Velma Kelly in “Chicago” so there is no uncertainty about her qualifications for starring in a musical or, according to E-Online, “a 3-D live-action, rock-musical extravaganza”.  That sounds a little more exciting to those of us who are turned off by the very word “musical”.
