Who would think that Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin would make a comedy together? Wilson and Black have already crossed paths, from their would-be TV show Heat Vision and Jack to the first season of Community, they’re both regular collaborators with Ben Stiller, and that gang of comedians. But Steve Martin seems to either make quality films or plain hackwork. Hard to say what The Big Year will be, which has three men taking a year off from life to explore the world. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards really tried to step it up a notch with this year’s ceremony by having Steve Martin return to host alongside “30 Rock’s“ Alec Baldwin. Too bad for us, they didn’t really open the show. Instead we got an intro featuring the nominees for Best Lead Actor and Actress followed by a musical number from Neil Patrick Harris. THEN Martin and Baldwin descended onto the stage…literally.

A trailer has been released for the upcoming Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin collaboration It’s Complicated. Writer/director Nancy Meyers takes us through a love quadrangle that features some of the best actors in Hollywood. It’s Complicated centers on the relationship of ex-spouses Jake and Jane. After 10 years of divorce they find themselves involved in a torrid affair, with each other! Jake has remarried, and Jane has oddly enough become the “other woman.” The film co-stars Steve Martin, Lake Bell, and John Krasinski. It’s distributed and produced by Universal, and will hit theaters on December 25.

A surprising almost-hit and pair of not too surprising flops hit DVD this week as Confessions of a Shopaholic, The Pink Panther 2 and Inhkeart roll onto disc. Luckily there is one film of quality being released, Waltz With Bashir.
Unfortunately, that’s about it for home theater lovers this week except for a pair of art films and couple TV series. At least we still have the three worst DVDs of the week for some unintentional comedy potential.
