Last night word spread like wildfire that 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb might be hopping into the directors’ chair that once warmed the bum of Sam Raimi. But not so fast overzealous Spidey fans! There’s a process to this blockbuster movie making thing. Over at DeadlineHollywood, they are confirming that Webb is in the running to direct Sony’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, but there are a lot of things that have to be done first.

Are we surprised that the latest Spider-Man movie has been pushed back an entire year? Are we shocked that it will no longer be Spider-Man 4, but some reboot that includes new actors and a new premise? If this announcement throws you for a loop, you haven’t been following the play by play of drama that has surrounded the film since its inception. According to Comingsoon, Sony has decided to start from scratch with the Spider-Man franchise, which means no Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, or Sam Raimi.

The upcoming Spidey film and Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor were set to debut within weeks of each other during the summer of 2011, but that schedule has gone out the window. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the shifting of Thor‘s release date is one of them.

According to Variety, the studio has its eye set on a live action adaptation of Risk, the popular Hasbro strategy game. Poor MGM can’t catch a break. The legendary studio has been at the center of a serious financial crisis over the past few weeks, and there seems to be no sign of relief in sight. According to WAMG, MGM could be losing its livelihood with the possible loss of Ian Flemings James Bond franchise. Some reports are suggesting that Twentieth Century Fox may be stepping in to buy the property.

Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been hired to pen the screenplay for the film, and they have given us a status update. The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe film adaptation has been actively looking for a studio home since it was dropped by Warner Bros a while back. According to Variety, Sony has saved the day and is in negotiations to produce the feature. Once the deal is finalized the studio will begin developing the film along with the Escape Artists production company.

With the Toronto International Film Festival being one of the biggest events of the year it’s no surprise that thanks to its exposure an independent dramedy got picked up. According to Variety, Sony Pictures has swooped in and bought the rights to the Peter Stebbings film, Defendor.
