universal Universal Studio President States We Make A Lot Of Sh***y Movies

Wow.  You know, you’ve got to respect a guy that is a straight shooter, who tells you how it is.  It’s a sure sign of integrity when a guy can tell you he’s made a mistake, right?  Or maybe it’s just indicative of someone who is so amazingly, filthy rich that he can pretty much say anything without consequence.  Either way, Universal chief Ron Meyer’s speech at the Savannah Film Festival recently dropped a few nuggets about how the film industry works, and about the goings on of Universal in particular: “We make a lot of sh***y movies and every one of them breaks my heart.”  He then went on to provide a list of recent films he’d green lit that sucked (seriously, this is priceless).

One of the geek hits to come out of South by Southwest is Joe Cornish‘s Attack the Block, which was executive produced by Edgar Wright. Cornish and Wright have worked together for years, and also wrote the upcoming Steven Spielberg film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. With the two of them doing press on their latest effort, their long-in-development film of Marvel comic’s Ant-Man was bound to come up, and they teased some information to The Playlist. The money quote from Cornish: “We’re currently working on it, not right now. But the day after tomorrow we’ll go to Los Angeles and…”

It’s no secret that M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was horrendous. The film didn’t exactly catch the essence of the series from which it was based, an issue that Scott Pilgrim vs The World definitely didn’t have. Therefore, let’s erase Shyamalan’s version and start from scratch. As a matter of fact, what would happen if Airbdender was combined with Scott Pilgrim?! Find out in the video below…

ramona knives8 11 10 Interview: Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ellen Wong for Scott Pilgrim

This weekend Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World hits theaters with two bad-ass, weapons wielding, beautiful ladies and not too long ago we were lucky enough to sit down with Mary Elizabeth Winstead who plays Ramona Flowers and Ellen Wong who plays Knives Chau and talk to them about making miracles happen (aka a great film). Both actresses are somewhat unknown, but not for long. Both of them turn out amazing performances and add the much needed heart and depth to the film while still kicking ass.

Check out our interview with them below (and after check out our interviews with Edgar Wright, Anna Kendrick, Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman)…

scott pilgrim vs the world 7 1 10 kc Upcoming Movies: Scott Pilgrim vs The World, The Expendables, Eat, Pray, Love

This week a lot of ass-kicking movies are hitting the theater including Scott Pilgrim vs the World and The Expendables. Pilgrim is based on the comic of the same name and stars Michael Cera as a guy who must defeat his girlfriend’s seven evil exes if he wants to continue dating her. It’s directed by Edgar Wright and is filled with colorful graphics, amped up fight scenes, and lots of comedy. On the grittier side we have Sylvester Stallone, and 90 percent of the world’s top action stars in The Expendables. It’s a film about “guns for hire” who try to take down a corrupt, South American dictator. It co-stars Stallone, Jason Statham and Jet Li.

See what other movies are opening this week…

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: Movie Review

Mary and Michael8 11 10 Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: Movie Review

The first time I saw Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was at Comic-Con, jam packed in a theater, from a balcony, in a room filled with so many fans it was hard to hear some of the dialogue because of all the laughter and cheers bouncing off the walls. At the press screening for the film in LA, I was reminded of how dull critics can be and how they can dampen the experience of watching a film like this. Though I am reviewing this film and technically a part of said “dull critics” and I did in fact love this film, it was obviously not made for me – it was made for the fans of the comic-book, fans of video games, fans of action, fans of humor, when you get down to it fans of movies in general. The amount of references in this film will blow your mind.

This is a great film and its goal is to entertain and it succeeds admirably — just don’t let the those “scared to laugh” critics get you down, have some fun and find out more about what makes this film great below…
