For a generation of film fans, ILM is where the magic happened. From Star Wars on, the company was one of the great pioneers of special effects, and they seamlessly transitioned into the digital era. For the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, I got a chance to talk to Aaron McBride, the film’s visual effects art director. McBride had worked on all of the previous Pirates films, so he saw the transition from Gore Vebinski to Rob Marshall. But for him it was all about the Mermaids. Check it out…

Johnny Depp and Rob Marshall are serious about remaking The Thin Man, and it appears nothing will stop them. After hiring Jerry Stahl to pen the script, Variety says they’ve now turned to David Koepp to finish it. Koepp – having penned Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park and Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way – has been been working as a go-to “closer” for a while, polishing or finishing drafts of recent Spielberg films like War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and recently did work on the troubled Men in Black III.

The Thin Man series, created by Dashiell Hammett, is best known from the six films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. The duo star as detectives Nick and Nora Charles, who spend as much time fighting crime as fighting hangovers. They are very wet movies, and the charm of the series is that their relationship is strong, but they drink to excess. Such may have been more charming in the 1930′s, but Johnny Depp has been shepherding a remake for his current Pirates of the Carribbean director Rob Marshall, and now (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter) the script is being worked on by Jerry Stahl.

Johnny Depp’s schedule keeps growing, growing, and growing. According to Vulture, the actor has his eye on a remake of The Thin Man, the first of many films adapted from the Dashiell Hammett novel on the same name. Depp must be having a ball working with Rob Marshall on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, because he wants him to direct The Thin Man as well.

Over at Yahoo, they’ve unleashed a new video promoting Rob Marshall‘s upcoming musical Nine. Unlike traditional trailers, this is a behind the scenes rehearsal featurette that intertwines with shots from the actual film. It’s quite entertaining, and you get to see the actors out of character. The video highlights the ladies of the cast (sorry Daniel), so check out their hard work in action.

The Rob Marshall adaptation of Nine will be at a theater near you starting November 25th, and the studio has been marketing the film like crazy. Two new photos from the musical have been released, and they feature Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Penelope Cruz. After taking a good look at both images, they have to be two of the most depressing photos I’ve ever seen. I know the film is about the highs and the lows of show business, but yeesh!
Take a look at Daniel and Penelope in Nine…
