Is it getting to be award season already? You may have heard of some of these through gossip columns or theater previews and some you may not. Most film fanatics love the “indy” film so here are your nominees with bonus info about whom the nominating committee consists of. May I have the envelope please…

Depending on how militant one is about their definition of “indie,” be it a budgetary classification or a faux-genre product of silent studio partners, Rachel Getting Married will either come across as scathingly honest or morbidly engineered. It’s an unsympathetic drama shot on video, chronicling a massive wedding weekend that’s just short enough on magic and emotional stability to feel true to life.
Its banquet tables are also packed to the walls with showbiz legends (Roger Corman lurks in certain scenes as a camera-wielding guest and Fab Five Freddy makes a toast), brought together by a veteran Hollywood player (director Jonathan Demme), with the whole act resting on a sordidly unflattering performance by a tabloid camera magnet (Anne Hathaway – read interview here).

Serious credit goes to Anne Hathaway for making up for the serious lack of time during the our interview. Rather than be content to run down the clock, she elected to speak at lightning speeds. Consider that all of the following sprung from her head in a little over twenty minutes and it’s easy to see why she is increasingly in demand and consistently lauded as one of the most dedicated talents of her generation.
Rachel Getting Married is already building steam (and the kind of polarizing reactions that tend to cluster around a risky movie) with Hathaway’s performance at the center. The film will be released next week on October 3rd. Now Annes gets a chance to speak (at a thousand words per minute) about the work that went into creating Kym, life on a post-doc Demme set, and exorcising the demons via the DNC.

Wow there are a LOT of films coming out this week, ranging from religious satire to Chihuahua films. You’ve got a lot comedies to choose from. Let’s start with, An American Carol, a film dedicated entirely to spoofing Michael Moore, then Religulous, with Bill Maher interviewing Jesus about… well Jesus, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, goes in the same category as Ghost Town, great UK actor in an okay US film. Then there’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which is simple and well done (can’t ask for much more). Lastly, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, which has actually been getting a lot of great reviews. Great for the kids or if you’re looking to just have a fun time and eat your popcorn. Who am I to judge?
If you’re looking for a story about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, you’ve got two great picks, Flash of Genius (Greg Kinnear and Lauren Graham interviews)or The Express. Both films have won many awards at film festivals and will give you something to care about for 90ish minutes. Rachel Getting Married is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for Anne Halloway (interview here), so that might be worth a gander. Lastly, Ballast, which I know very little about has been winning awards everywhere. Your call!
Here is all your movie info with cast and review information, reviews, showtimes, and trailers! Enjoy!
