Whenever a CGI creature is one of the central characters in a film there’s only man capable of bringing them to life — Andy Serkis! The actor who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings has landed a new gig as the “main ape” in the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes. According to 20th Century Fox, he’s joining the cast that currently includes James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow.

A few days ago there was a rumor that Don Cheadle and Freida Pinto were offered roles in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming prequel, Rise of the Apes and it turns out it was partially true. According to THR, the Slumdog Millionaire actress has officially signed on for the film alongside James Franco and fellow newcomer John Lithgow.

James Franco is about to put his ridiculously high cheekbones to good use according to Deadline. The actor has landed the lead in 20th Century Fox’s prequel to Planet of the Apes entitled, Rise of the Apes. Franco has been in negotiations with the film’s producers over the past week and has just closed the deal. Move over Charlton Heston, there’s a new man in town.

According to Mike Fleming over at Deadline New York, Rupert Wyatt has been hired to usher Planet of the Apes into the new decade. The last time we saw a film in the franchise it was the 2001 reboot by Tim Burton and almost ten years later there’s a prequel on the horizon and Wyatt’s been tapped to direct it.

Our last exposure to the Planet of the Apes franchise came courtesy of Tim Burton’s 2001 remake that featured Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. The movie was a modest success, but nothing to write home about so why is 20th Century Fox trying to make another one? Over at Vulture they’re reporting that the Apes aren’t dead and the studio wants them to live again.
