We heard back in February that Penelope Cruz would be joining Johnny Depp, the remaining cast member of the Pirates franchise for the fourth installment of the series entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides but we weren’t sure what she was cast as. Thanks to an interview with MTV the captain of the billion dollar series, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, explained that Penelope will portray the feisty, Spanish daughter of evil pirate Blackbeard. At some point in the movie she with Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and apparently some sparks fly.
Bruckheimer stated:

Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz may have signed on to co-star in Disney’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. With the exception of Johnny Depp this would be a major casting coup for the series that’s been on shaky ground for the past few months. THR recently posted the story and then magically pulled it from their site, but before they did we managed to get some info on Cruz’s involvement.

The Rob Marshall adaptation of Nine will be at a theater near you starting November 25th, and the studio has been marketing the film like crazy. Two new photos from the musical have been released, and they feature Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Penelope Cruz. After taking a good look at both images, they have to be two of the most depressing photos I’ve ever seen. I know the film is about the highs and the lows of show business, but yeesh!
Take a look at Daniel and Penelope in Nine…

They feature Academy Award winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, and Sophia Loren as well as Oscar nominee Kate Hudson. I’m convinced only critically acclaimed actors could audition for this film.

Broken Embraces U.S. release date is set for November 20, 2009, but only in limited theaters. I haven’t seen much promotion prior to this, but according to Cinemablend, the following trailer was released by the U.K. film distributor Pathe.

Below are this week feature film, TV, special edition and horrible straight-to-DVD releases. Check them out below…
FEATURE FILMS
Twilight
Starring: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
Okay. So the phenomenon is finally on DVD. Let the 13-year-old girls and those whose brains are still stuck in adolescence rejoice. Really, this DVD release is about as exciting as a film of a tree growing finally hitting the video store shelves. Come on. Why do we all feed this insipid beast that is built purely on hype and not quality at all? Stephen King really said it best when he pointed out the difference between “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” is that J.K. Rowling can write and Stephanie Meyers cannot. This is the movie equivalent.
Though no amount of bad press will ever stop people from buying this two-disc set.
