Realistically, Oren Peli‘s 2009 film Paranormal Activity should never had generated a sequel. There’s not much of a story to tell and explaining why people are haunted by ghosts is just as likely to ruin the mystique as expand on it. But 2010′s Paranormal Activity 2 was also a huge hit, and so a year later there’s a third film. And unlike the last film – which went back and forth in time- this time it’s entirely a prequel. The results are more effective, but it works better as a haunted house film than as a story.

In October, Paranormal Activity 2 opened to great reviews and even greater money. The film was a huge success and has grossed $156 million so far at the box office. The first film topped off at $193 million so it won’t be long before the sequel catches up. While Paramount is counting their money, they’ve decided to push a third film into development, and according to Bloody Disgusting they’ve already got a release date set.

This weekend horror films Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 took the top two spots at the box office. The final installment of the long-running Saw franchise topped the box office with $24.2 million — people sure do love the jigsaw.

Now, most of the movies down below have been the top ten week after week, but this weekend Conviction, starring Hilary Swank, made it’s way up the ladder once it was finally given a wider release. Last week the legal drama was all the way down at number 25. Impressive, eh?

This Halloween season everyone is going bananas for Paranormal Activity, the sequel. Much like its predecessor, the horror film has broken box office records. It took the number one spot this weekend earning $41 million, while breaking the record for the biggest midnight gross for an R-rated movie. Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter, which was also new this weekend, came in at number four — he just couldn’t keep those crazy Jackass boys away from the number 2 spot!
