This Halloween season everyone is going bananas for Paranormal Activity, the sequel. Much like its predecessor, the horror film has broken box office records. It took the number one spot this weekend earning $41 million, while breaking the record for the biggest midnight gross for an R-rated movie. Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter, which was also new this weekend, came in at number four — he just couldn’t keep those crazy Jackass boys away from the number 2 spot!

It’s rare that you find a crowd as passionate and as dedicated as the Paranormal Activity fans. They like many other horror film fans enjoy being scared out of the minds but unlike the Saw crowd, they’re not looking for gore, they’re looking for something truly scary. What they found in Paranormal Activity and hopefully in Paranormal Activity 2 was a film that could scare them to the core;onw that played on their base emotions, that felt real and that delivered a new, edgy horror film.

The second film had a lot to live up to, but with such a strong following, the fans didn’t want to question the film, they wanted to  be there from the very beginning in support of it. Over on the Paramount website, the director of Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli has officially put all the rumors on who will direct the sequel to bed and announced that Paranormal Activity 2 will be directed by Kip Williams. Despite the rumors that Akiva Goldsma, Kevin Greutert, Greg McLean and even Brian De Palma (that’s a big one) might be coming on board, Peli went with director he believes in.

Although it’s still a shame that Peli won’t be staying on to direct the film himself, it seems that he’s (at least through the Paramount website) happily handing over the reins to Williams as a director and I’m sure he’ll stay on as some kind of producer (at least an executive that walks on, gets a cup of coffee and says “I love/hate it!” and goes back to another project).
