monsters vs aliensalp9 28 09 New DVD Releases: Monsters vs. Aliens, The Wizard of Oz, Life on Mars

Not a whole lot on DVD this week.  The 3-D extravaganza Monsters vs. Aliens is about all we have in the feature category with just a few minuscule indie films joining the fray.

There’s still some TV on DVD to dominate your player, and the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz to keep you happy on this meager week.  And, of course, the three worst DVDs anywhere!

Check it all out below…

Movie Releases: The Haunting in Connecticut, Monsters Vs. Aliens…

moviereleases09 3 27 Movie Releases: The Haunting in Connecticut, Monsters Vs. Aliens...

This week we have Monsters vs. Aliens for the kiddies and childlike adults out there. The Dreamworks animated film stars Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan, Will Arnett, Hugh Laurie, and Kiefer Sutherland. Whew! The animation for the movie looks pretty amazing, and it looks like it would be pretty incredible to see in IMAX 3D.

Next on the list is the directorial debut of Fred Durst (read interview) with The Education of Charlie Banks. This would be interesting to watch simply because it is such a career change for a rock-rap singer from the late 90′s, and apparently it’s not bad. The Haunting in Connecticut is based on the true story of a family living in, you guessed it, a haunted house. Last but not least, we have 12 Rounds, the action packed film starring WWE’s John Cena. It doesn’t really matter what the plot is, it has John Cena in it! Enough said.

Here are the movie releases this weekend (3/27/09):

mvsv09 3 27 Monsters vs. Aliens Feature

Dreamworks introduces the ultimate animated 3-D creature-feature, with Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon’s Monsters Vs. Aliens – that’s right, the battle that children (and those guilt-ridden, imaginative adults) have fantasized about since Monsters Inc. and Space Jam. When Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is bulldozed by a gunk-infested meteor on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows 49 feet and eleven inches. While imprisoned in a secret government compound, she meets a congenial squad of monsters: Cockroach (Hugh Laurie), Half-Ape/Half-Fish (Will Arnett), and B.O.B. (Seth Rogen). When an alien robot lands on Earth and begins destroying the country, the military releases the monsters to combat the alien robot and, obviously, save the world!

3D Movies: Worth an Extra $5?

3d 3D Movies: Worth an Extra $5?

In 2009 there will be at least 14 films released in the United States in 3D, including the long awaited James Cameron “Avatar”. Studios from Dreamworks to Disney are expanding facilities, hiring new programmers and animators all in the hope that filmgoers will continue to flock to 3D. So far, the format has proved lucrative. Although only 20% of the screens Beowulf played on were 3D, they ultimately accounted for 40% of its receipts. Part of that was due to a greater amount of warm bodies in the 3D seats, but more importantly, part of that was due to the extra cash paid by the Imax patrons who saw it in 3D.  Now, Imax format has always commanded an extra fee over a regular screen, but come on, three stories of visuals is kinda worth it, don’t you think?  A regular screen with 3D?  What’s that worth?  Apparently, an extra Lincoln.

monstwersaliens08 11 04 New Monsters Vs. Aliens Trailer

A new 3-D animation starring (the voices of) Seth Rogen, Reese Witherspoon, and Paul Rudd. Monsters Vs. Aliens is a parody of the many “end of the world movies” that seem to be attacking mainly the US and then the rest of the world. I’m a fan of the cast in any form and to tell you the truth, this actually looks pretty good if you have to take a little one to the movies or have a massive hang over and can’t take anything too heavy (you know what I’m talking about.)

The movie comes out March 27, 2009. Check out the trailer below…
