After the uneven travesty that was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, director Mike Newell needs a rebound — fast! Luckily for him, he’s landed a new gig that will have him to take on more classic material. According to THR, Newell will helm a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations.
A couple weeks ago David O. Russell decided not to direct the highly anticipated adaptation, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which left the job open for some of Hollywood’s most eager filmmakers. According to a report from The Wrap, some heavy hitters have made the directing shortlist including Oscar winner Jonathan Demme and Let Me In helmer Matt Reeves. Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor but his talent is completely wasted on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. If I could describe the film in one word it would be “boring.” This is supposed to be a blockbuster summer action flick and even though it’s being released at the right time, has the right producer (Jerry Bruckheimer), and the right studio backing it (Disney), it gets it all wrong!
The Lone Ranger feature is definitely happening. The Disney big screen adaptation of the old school radio/television series has been in development for a while now, and two important roles have already been filled. Jerry Bruckheimer is on board to produce and Johnny Depp will star as Tonto, the sidekick to the Lone Ranger. According to /Film another name is being considered for the production, and it’s Mike Newell. The director is currently in talks to helm the Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott adaptation.
