The Avengers has so dominated the box office – and we’re looking at a holiday weekend – that it’s possible that Men in Black III might not put The Avengers into second place. It’s also inevitable by weekend’s end that Avengers will be over half a billion domestic. That said, it’s also possible that MIB3 could do a hundred over the four-day weekend. There are variables at play.
In Men In Black 3, Josh Brolin plays the 1960′s version of Tommy Lee Jones‘ Agent K. His cool, charm and optimism offer a new side to a character we all knew to be otherwise grumpy. We recently got the chance to talk to Brolin. He told us why he chose to join the Men in Black, the terrifying process of impersonating Jones, and his first impression of Will Smith.

Men In Black 3 has become a blockbuster underdog, mainly because it’s the movie no one was asking for, and has to overcome a lot of bad buzz about re-shoots. It’s been 10 years since we last saw Will Smith‘s Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones‘ Agent K monitor alien activity on Earth, and the new film offers a time travel twist which introduces Josh Brolin as the new K, placing Jones in the back seat. Does MIB3 have what it takes to overcome being a little outdated and a “troubled production?”

Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin…as Tommy Lee Jones? That’s the set up from the Men in Black 3 teaser trailer, one that seems to be there to refresh viewers on the world of the Men in Black. Though the rough outline of the plot has been known for a while, this gives a sense of what the film is about, with newcomer Emma Thompson telling the viewers that Jones’s K character has been dead for forty years. One of the greatest books on film is easily Julie Salamon’s The Devil’s Candy, which chronicled every bad turn Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Bonfire of the Vanities took. At this point, one hopes there’s an author on set of Men in Black III, as there’s undoubtedly a great story to be told about its production. Having hired a new writer mid-shoot, and having delayed production again recently, the film took another hit when Alec Baldwin told Vulture Monday he had to drop out, but was moving on to the Adam Shankman-directed, Tom Cruise-starring musical Rock of Ages.
What the heck is going on with Sony’s Men in Black 3? The movie has experienced more than its fair share of problems over the past few months and things are getting worse. According to THR, the film began shooting last fall despite having an incomplete script and now that’s coming back to bite them in the butts!
Poor Men in Black III just can’t catch a break. The Sony production has been hit with a delay according to the Los Angeles Times. You might be asking yourself, what happened? The shoot had already begun last year and we saw our fair share of paparazzi photos from the set. It turns out that MIB3 has been on a nearly two month hiatus, which was supposed to end in February. Unfortunately, it’s been pushed back to March 28.
