After the original X-Men Trilogy wrapped in 2006, two spin-offs were put into development: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Magneto. Obviously, Wolverine has come and gone but Magneto hasn’t seen the light of day. The film, which would chronicle the rise of the supervillain has taken a backseat to another property, X-Men First Class.

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been with the film franchise since its debut back in 2000, and Empire was lucky enough to land an interview with her to get the scoop on the future of the pending X-Men spin-offs. According to her, it seems like their focus is geared more towards the next Wolverine, and it will be a while before any of the others (Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, or Magneto) see production.

Is Ian Mckellen the only person in The Hobbit fold willing to spill the beans on the movie? It seems like everytime we turn around he’s got something new to say about the production. It appears that Fox and director David Goyer are under the impression that they can make a legitimate Magneto spin-off. It’s no secret that Magneto was intended to be the first film in the X-Men Origins series, but somehow the fan outcry and the financial potential of Wolverine won out instead. According to FirstShowing, Goyer is reassuring us that we can still look forward to a prequel based on the Marvel villain. More on the story below.

Last week I posted an article asking the question, who should be next in line to have their own X-Men spin-off? So much hype has been thrown in the direction of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool that I felt that producers forgot about the earliest X-Men Origins project, Magneto. Both Magneto and Wolverine were developed right after X3, but Wolverine got the upper hand. Since then the Magneto property has been dormant and not much has been said about its future. Finally one of the X-Men film producers opened up about the character and his possible solo film.

If your suffering from Wolverine overload there’s a method to the madness. As the first official installment of the X-Men Origins series the box office success of this film is crucial. After the release of X3: The Last Stand in 2006, two spin-off properties were fast tracked for development, Wolverine and Magneto. At first the two projects were running neck in neck in terms of production, but Wolverine eventually won the race. With it’s release date only a few weeks away talk has surfaced regarding who will be the next character in line to carry on the X-Men title. At first glance you might think it would rebound back to Magneto, but there’s another red shrouded mutant in waiting and his name is Deadpool.

After the success of the billion dollar X-Men trilogy, 20 Century Fox has decided to keep the franchise alive by making prequels and spinoffs. Next May, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will kick-start the summer blockbuster season, followed by the developing project Magneto. Staying within the “origin” storyline, Fox has announced their newest X-Men incarnation, First Class.
According to Variety, in this installation, producers want to focus on a younger group of mutants at the Xavier Institute. The story will follow an adolescent set of students at the school as opposed to the adults. So who would you hire to write a script chalked full of teen angst? How about the same person who brought you The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Josh Schwartz!
