The 60′s, arguably the most interesting decade of the 20th century, brought a wave of social and political movement to the US. Among the plethora of political groups advocating for under-represented citizens were The Black Panthers, grounded in black nationalism. First time writer/director Tanya Hamilton’s Night Catches Us highlights a group of former Panthers grappling with the late aftermath of the movement on the south side of Philly. The film stars Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington and hits theaters nationwide Friday, December 3rd.

The story is adapted from the award winning stage play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, which was penned by Ntozake Shange in 1977. Sony Pictures Classics has just released the official trailer for director Rodrigo Garcia’s family drama about different perspectives on adoption in Mother and Child starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits and Samuel L. Jackson.
Although this film looks like it could be quiet deep and emotional, there are so many good, serious, depressing movies coming out it makes me crave more Despicable Mes and Hot Tub Time Machines. That being said, I’ll be giving this one a go later this week if only to see if Bening can top her stellar performance in The Kids Are Alright.
