Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is an odd title for a film that gives you nothing but good reason to be afraid of the dark, but I guess that’s all part of the fun of it! There is a lot about this film that makes it a cliched horror film, the only difference is that there are some impressive A-list actors, interesting new monsters and a splash of Guillermo del Toro (interview) from time to time. The problem is, that this film asks you to suspend your beliefs in the wrong ways. Believing that monsters exists in basement and are after your teeth — awesome! Guillermo Del Toro‘s been up for a number of different projects since 2008′s Hellboy II, but nothing has come together. And though he’s been attached to a number of different projects (and seems to be going forward with Pacific Rim), as a producer he’s kept himself busy. He’s been consulting with DreamWorks on their animated films, and was the co-writer and producer of the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake, which was directed by newcomer Troy Nixley. So the little mini-series that could (or really, really couldn’t, if you read the reviews) finally made it onto television last night after being dropped by the history channel—The Kennedys, the miniseries about (you guessed it) the Kennedys, debuted last night on ReelzChannel (best known as the network to hit up when you’re itching for a Caroline in the City marathon).

Do you remember hearing about Guillermo del Toro’s newest horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark? It was one of the most terrifying panels at last year’s Comic-Con, and we mean that in a good way. The film that stars Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, somehow missed its initial release date, which was set for January 21, 2011. The movie dropped into the abyss of forgotten films, but according to THR it’s got a second shot at life.

Adam Sandler may have found his new leading lady in Katie Holmes according to a report from THR. The trade claims that the actress is in talks to star opposite Sandler in his upcoming film Jack and Jill, a comedy that has the actor reuniting with his Grown Ups director Dennis Dugan. Are you in the mood for a sappy, ensemble dramedy about lost love and strained friendships? If so, you’re going to love The Romantics. It’s an upcoming film that features one of the most mix-matched casts I’ve ever seen, and is based on the novel of the same name written by Galt Niederhoffer, who also produced and directed the film. What happens when you mix “Dawson’s Creek” with “The O.C.“? Watch the trailer and find out…

The Extra Man premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival’s largest venue to fairly solid reviews (check out our Sundance Review). It is the story of idealists who exist just outside of the commonly accepted reality of New York City, who come together to find themselves and accept one another. It’s somewhat of a hard pitch to sell, but luckily the lead performances make it worthwhile.
Check out our full review (and our Sundance Review) for The Extra Man…
