The Avengers had its Hollywood premiere last night, and the early buzz on the film is that it’s a home run, with analysts predicting the film will clear at least $120 million, like, immediately. Not only that, the film is reportedly a blockbuster that’s—gasp!—actually good. Curious about how the film came together? Wow. I mean, seriously, WOW. The Cabin in the Woods is unlike any horror film you will ever see, bending not only the horror genre on its totally whacked ear but twisting all kinds of other cinematic techniques as well. From the minds of Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, it is truly one of the most inventive and ingenious movies to come around in a long time.

Joss Whedon’s having a rather eventful 2012—in addition to writing and directing the megabudget superhero colossus that is The Avengers, a horror film that he produced and co-wrote with director and former Whedon Buffy the Vampire Slayer collaborator Drew Goddard in 2009 called The Cabin in the Woods is finally seeing the light of day after three years of silence due to the film’s parent studio, MGM, going bankrupt. And if you’re curious about the unconventional horror film, we’ve got a spooky clip after the jump.

The long-delayed Cabin in the Woods is about to hit theaters, and word on it has been absolutely stellar. It played like gangbusters to the SXSW crowd, and Joss Whedon‘s looking for a month of big wins if audiences go for this (and that other picture of his, The Avengers). He co-wrote this with Drew Godard – who also directed – and now we’re starting to get some clips. Check the first one out…

Back in February, we received a new Avengers trailer that featured a bevy of new footage containing the Hulk, Loki, and a ton of action, and it was, quite frankly, pretty exciting. But then Japan went and received a trailer with even more new footage, stealing all of our thunder with new shots of the film’s otherworldy villains, the SHIELD mobile base, and the Avengers’ jet.

Now that Summer Movie season is almost here (scary, right?), it’s fair to say that Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers came out of the gate swinging, and hasn’t stopped. Every week or so there’s been a new image or promotional item, and now that we’re less than two months away, it’s really kicking into gear. Yesterday AMC theaters announced a six film marathon of Avengers movies concluding with the new film, and now there’s heavily photo-shopped character posters (via Empire). Check them out:

Here that rumbling noise? It’s the sound of Marvel Studios getting just a little nervous, as Avengers director Joss Whedon has already begun talking about The Avengers 2 and, going against the general studio mandate of ‘more explosions, more sex, more SFX,’ Whedon has said he wants The Avengers 2 to be a much smaller and intimate film than the special effects extravaganza that is set for a May 4, 2012 release.

Last month, we showed you five new pictures from The Avengers, featuring stars Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Scarlet Johansson looking at things very, very dramatically. They didn’t really indicate much in the way of plot (beyond the fact that the Avengers are going to, you know, assemble at some point), but hey, we at least got to see that Bruce Banner is going to dress in his classic purple and Downey Jr. still has that weirdly sculpted goatee. Now we have two new pics featuring the heroes—you guessed it—staring fixedly at things.

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods was the unfortunate victim of financing. Set up with MGM, the studio went through a rocky period, which left Woods and their Red Dawn remake distributor-less. Cabin was shot in 2009, but will finally see the light of day April 13, 2012. But if you don’t believe it will finally come out, there’s now proof as Lionsgate has put out a trailer.
