Though it premiered at the Cannes festival to modestly positive reviews, we’re still hungry to see Tom Hillcoat’s Lawless – which stars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce - something fierce. The film doesn’t come out theatrically until August, so we’ll have to make due with this new clip from Hulu.

Racism is still a hot button issue in America, and though the civil rights movement was a previous generation’s struggle, it’s hard to address those issues cinematically and still make an entertaining film. 2011′s The Help comes at a time when issue pictures are out of fashion, and so it seems slightly fresher than it might have had it come out in any other decade. And yet, it’s the same sort of empowerment movie as we’ve seen before. The bottom line is that the film is fun and has good performances from performers like Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard. But as a commentary on the issues of race in America, it’s decidedly lacking. Check out our review…

In 2010, there was word that Cannes was holding up announcing their slate in hopes that Terrence Malick‘s Tree of Life would be ready in time. Cannes got Tree of Life- where it recieved some boos and won the Palme D’or – but a year later, as Malick and company were still deep in post-production. Most filmmakers have scant months (and sometimes weeks) to do their post-production, but such lengthy tinkering with the final cut is part of the legend of Terrence Malick, a mercurial talent who’s proved more productive over the last ten years than he had for the first thirty of his career. Tree is Malick’s fifth film, and easily his most personal. It goes out on limited release this weekend…

When you have a film with Sam Worthington, Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Ciaran Hinds, Jessica Chastain and Martin Csokas you expect it to hit theaters. When it’s directed by Shakespeare in Love‘s John Madden, and written by Mathew Vaughn and Jane Goldman it seems like something of a powehouse. And yet The Debt has sat around for at least a year. Festival screenings can kill anything. Though this may had to do with Miramax (the film’s home) being scuttled by Walt Disney studios. Take a look at the trailer…

Last week we learned that Shia LaBeouf was in negotiations to join Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat’s adaptation of The Wettest County. According to THR, the young actor’s involvement is a done deal and he’s been confirmed to star in the passion project and he’s not the only one joining the cast. Jessica Chastain has also been confirmed to play one of the female leads.
