In a year with a number of great movies, The Oscars mostly went for comfort food over bold decisions, but what else is to be expected at this point? It’s hard to be upset with a voting block that has – time and time again – picked nice and safe and maybe a little political over most of the films that tend to matter. When you look back at 1999, who still thinks American Beauty was the best of that year? And so – as expected – The Artist won big.

It’s time to catch up on this week’s news. For starters, it seems like a head honcho, Harvey Weinstein, is seriously considering ending his relationship with the MPAA. Also, a new meme has hit the web, this time involving French actor Jean Dujardin. It seems he’s been sleeping around (it’s not what you’re thinking though). Though Zooey Deschanel was the host of this week’s Saturday Night Live, she was upstaged by two of its guests: Jean Dujardin and Nicolas Cage. Both came to promote and mock their movies, and it made for one of the all around best SNL’s in a while (though the musical guests were a low point). Dujardin, who would win the BAFTA for best actor the next day, came to do a musical number, while Cage went to the update desk to talk about his latest Ghost Rider film. Check it out…

The award season is getting close to wrapping up, and – as expected – Michel Hazanavicius‘s The Artist is continuing to sweep. Its latest victory was at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts film awards, where it walked away with seven prizes, including best film, director, screenplay and best actor for Jean Durjardin‘s lead performance. Meryl Streep‘s win for The Iron Lady was the only upset of the usual winners (beating Viola Davis), but Octavia Spencer for The Help and Christopher Plummer for Beginners were also awarded, which goes with most of the major awards to date. Having been building award steam since November, it looks like Michel Hazanavicius‘s The Artist is an unstoppable juggernaut of Oscar-sized proportions. Its latest victory is winning the Producer’s Guild Award for best picture, and it should get more than a handful of nominations when the Oscar nominees are announced tomorrow.
