On February 8, 1931, something happened that would change the course of cinematic and pop culture history forever: James Byron Dean was born. More than just a pretty face, Dean was one of the most talented actors of his generation, which included such greats as Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, and Dennis Hopper. Recently, a mysterious epidemic has been sweeping across Hollywood.  At first, this illness was seen only a few times a year, but now it has become a full on plague within the industry. I’m referring to the disease that causes studio executives to “remake”, “re-imagine”, or “update” older films for a new generation. Don’t get me wrong, remakes are as old as the hills, they’re nothing new, but the motivation behind them, as well as the quality of their content has changed dramatically. Remakes used to be a means of improving on the original, but at some point they became the industries crutch for easy money.

Farewell Paul Newman

Paul Newman’s journalistic wake will most likely be saturated with punny titles incorporating his most famous films.  “The Hustler’s Last Hustle”, “Hollywood’s Cool Hand”, etc etc.  I’ll try to restrain myself from doing this.  I also don’t think it will do much good to speculate about what a nice man he was, although he seemed like a HELL of a nice guy.  He played a badass on more than one occasion, but he stayed married to the same woman (Joanne Woodward) his entire life, did some humanitarian work and made some damn good lemonade in the process.
