JamesCameronSanctum1 Will James Cameron Become the Next George Lucas?

Love him or hate him, director James Cameron has never been one to play it safe. But Cameron just announced that he is not open to developing any projects, original or otherwise, in the near future. Instead he will focus entirely on directing sequels to his groundbreaking 3D epic Avatar. This is cause for concern. In the past, some directors opted to coast off huge successes and ended up irrevocably damaging their reputations. The most notable of these being George Lucas with his Star Wars franchise. Will James Cameron follow in his path?

Fans of James Cameron’s earlier work (the first two Terminator films, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies) have been waiting patiently for 15 years for the mercurial director to return to non-Avatar filmmaking, as not all of us have been fans of his Dances with Ferngully the Last Rainforest CGI extravaganza.  Well, Cameron fans, you’re in for something of a wait (like, forever): Cameron has announced he’ll only be making Avatar sequels in the future, and is already planning on moving beyond the already-announced Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 to film Avatar 4.

Avatar2 Avatar 2 Producer: Sequel Not Likely To Be Released Before 2016

Bad news for fans of Dances With Wolves in Ferngully the Last Rainforest Avatar—Fox had previously announced that the sequel, Avatar 2, would have a 2014 release date, with Avatar 3 to quickly follow in 2015.  However, as /Film points out, Avatar 2 has no green light or official cast, and with James Cameron busying himself with Titanic 3D and making record-busting deep sea dives, the sequel seems to be pushed ever further in the future—so much so that producer Jon Landau has hinted that the earliest we’d see anything from Avatar 2 may not be until 2016.

james cameron Director James Cameron Has Set The Record For Deepest Solo Sea Dive

He may be, by all accounts, a dictatorial machine while on the sets of his films, but you’ve got to hand it to director James Cameron (Avatar, Terminator 2)—the man commits.   The man who directed The Abyss, and who has long had a passion for oceanography, spent last Sunday completing the deepest solo ocean dive ever.  So…what did you do with your weekend?

Disney World Looking to Add Avatar-based Theme Land

AvatarNYFCOALP12 13 091 Disney World Looking to Add Avatar based Theme Land

Avatar is the most successful (unadjusted) film to ever play in American theaters, but though James Cameron has been talking sequels, it’s hard to weigh the film’s cultural weight. Perhaps the blue paint has kept it from being a hot-button Halloween costume (that and the nudity), but it’s two years later, and it’s unknown when it will it be sequelized, and there doesn’t seem to be much passion in the air for the film. Perhaps Disneyworld will stoke those fires, as they’ve announced they will start construction on Avatar-themed areas in 2013.

sanctum2 3 11 Distributors Push Back Sanctum Japanese Release Date Due To Cyclone Footage

Last week we reported that Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, which opens with scenes from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, was pulled prematurely from Japanese theaters by Warner Bros. due to earthquake and subsequent tsunami which recently struck the country.  Hereafter is not alone—Variety now reports that the Japanese release date for the James Cameron-produced  thriller Sanctum has been indefinitely pushed back, as the film features “scenes of a cyclone hitting a South Pacific island and water rushing through a cave.”

sanctum2 3 11 Sanctum: Movie Review

The heavily marketed “James Cameron Production” Sanctum, directed by the clearly inexperienced Alister Grierson swamps theaters this Friday. It’s safe to assume that most people would interpret Cameron’s E.P. credit as a ringing endorsement of quality cinema. I, however, know it to be Universal’s deceptive maneuver to bait fools to the box office.

Interview: James Cameron For Sanctum

JamesCameronSanctum1 Interview: James Cameron For Sanctum

Sanctum‘s Australian director Alister Grierson’s has one source of audience bait: James Cameron‘s name in enormous, bold font in the center of his billboards. The multi-Oscar winning director/writer/producer acts as an EP on this shipwreck of a film (pun INTENDED) about stranded (!!!) scuba divers. Sanctum is a not a Cameron film, it’s very much a project that he sat back on and lent his name to, but what kind of fool forgoes an opportunity to speak with James Cameron?

We were fortunate enough to sit down with the filmmaker to discuss his film. Check out the interview below…
