Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus09 12 21 Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus FINALLY Gets Wide Release

Releasing a film is a delicate art that try as I might, I never truly understand. Who would think that Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Heath Ledger‘s final film, directed by Terry Gilliam one of the creative minds in Hollywood, with a supporting cast that includes three of the hottest men in Hollywood, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell would be difficult to get into theaters? Are blue-flying cat people all audiences can think about? Because Gilliam might have some in floating around in the background of this dream-like fantasy!

Although we reviewed the film and posted our interview with Terry Gilliam weeks ago and told you to go and see it, it was only playing in a grand total of 4 theaters in both LA and NY combined. Many of you complained and rightly so! But your cries have been heard (proving that you have a say as to what’s in theaters, NOT just studios) and starting this week on January 8th, the film will finally make its way into 500 theaters around the US for audiences to enjoy!

Below is a full list of theaters that will be playing Gilliam’s ”fantastical morality tale.” Enjoy…

Interview: Terry Gilliam for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

the imaginarium of doctor parnassus 20090916105534354 640w Interview: Terry Gilliam for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

When you think of a Terry Gilliam film, wild images, colors and creations come to mind. As Gilliam walked into the intimate press conference that was held for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, you could tell his personality is just as unique as his films. He walked in, wearing a patterned button down shirt, his hair was loosely tied back in a ponytail, and he went straight to the window and looked out to admire the view from the 9th floor of the Four Seasons. With a smile he sat down and with open arms welcomed questions of all sorts.

He spoke openly and freely, perfectly aware of what others have said about him, both good and bad, and unafraid to talk about anything we were willing to bring up. He spoke about his goals as a film-maker, how he always tries to create an experience for his audience to take in and not necessarily analyze. Most importantly the tries to create films for people to enjoy.

There were of course questions asked about Heath Ledger’s final performance and Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell stepping in to finish the film. What was beautiful was that Gilliam didn’t skirt the issue but answered the questions honestly, showing that there are no dark secrets to Ledger’s death and that he more than anyone saw the beauty in Ledger’s talents and misses him dearly…

Now, Comme Au Cinema has just brought us three new clips (actually one of them we’ve seen, but now it’s in better quality) of the film, which show us a small piece of Heath Ledger’s final performance, as well as some absolutely beautiful shots that look straight out Terry Gilliam’s imagination.

ledger First Footage of Dr. Parnassus Debuted at Cannes

During the opening ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival they showed a nice video montage featuring all the films making their debuts this year. I can honestly say the most anticipated feature has to be The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It’s Heath Ledger’s final film, and features Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell as his replacement’s in the role of Tony.

In the video montage each film doesn’t really get that much time to shine but the few seconds you do see are well worth it.

heath ledger as tony More Doctor Parnassus Photos and Distribution News

The final film of the late Oscar winner Heath Ledger, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has had an uphill battle in terms of production and distribution. The fantastical and complex story paired with the unfortunate passing of it’s lead actor posed more than enough problems for director Terry Gilliam. The film was somewhat rescued by Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell when they decided to step in for Ledger in the role of Tony. Even though it’s future is uncertain, the film is still being promoted and will make it’s debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. I’ve scored several production photos from Parnassus that feature co-stars Christopher Plummer and actress Lily Cole.

The Images of Dr. Parnassus

pernassus The Images of Dr. Parnassus This movie seems to be completely cloaked in mystery. So here are a few stills to shed some light on it. Though we still only know the basic out line of the story, this gives us a better idea of what Director Terry Gilliam has in mind visually. This cast looks simply amazing in this theatrical/cabaret garb. Not only are we presented with four A-list actors to portray one fellow (i.e. Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law as “Tony”), but we also have some bad-ass actors in supporting roles.

For example, Tom Waits (musical genius) is the perfect man to play the devilish character of Mr. Nick. Who else can speak with a voice made of smoke? And veteran film actor Christopher Plummer as the elder Dr. Parnassus! Being that this was Heath Ledger’s last film, I’m sure tons of people will be lining up to see it; that aside, these photos have sparked an increased interest for me.
Here are some still from Terry Gilliam’s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus:

First Look at The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

pernassus First Look at The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

A promotional image from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has appeared on the website of the film’s cinematographer, Nicola Pecorini. As you may know, Parnassus was the project the late Heath Ledger was working on right before his death. With such an unfortunate circumstance the film was left incomplete, and it’s future was uncertain. In an act of Hollywood charity, fellow actors Johnny DeppJude Law, and Colin Farrell decided to step into Ledger’s role of “Tony”. Thankfully, because of the film’s mystical storyline, the character can be believably portrayed by all four actors without ruining the story.

I’m not sure if the above photo is a studio released promotion or not, but it wouldn’t make sense for the cinematographer to have a fake poster on his official website. The film is scheduled for release on September 24 of this year.
