Summer officially ends this weekend as Labor Day signals that kids are going back to school, and that temperatures will begin dropping. This was a big summer for movies, with Harry Potter 7.2, Transformers 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 making more than a billion dollars worldwide. Much of the big money titles were franchise starters or sequels, but there were a few surprises. Check out the top ten (sorta) list…

There’s something very appealing about being the very last of something. Everyone wants a piece, and that’s what happened this weekend with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. At least three records were broken during the last few days including The Dark Knight‘s highest-grossing opening weekend of $158.4 million by over $10 million. Harry Potter also beat out the other phenomenon, Twilight, by breaking two of its records — biggest opening day with $92.1 million and highest midnight previews with $43.5 million. Most films, along with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, were completely overshadowed by the Wizard boy movie. Check out the numbers below.

After last weekend’s modest showing at the box office, the latest and last Harry Potter film is going to blow away the competition this weekend. This means Winnie the Pooh is going to face a blustery day, while Horrible Bosses and The Zookeeper to be left in the wind along with 4th July holiday leftovers. Check out our predictions…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the long awaited finale is finally here, and though fans will be able to cheer along to the film, my biggest problem is that they won’t really be able to cry. It’s hard not to like this film on some levels because even though it would never stand alone and won’t be the film we all remember from the series, it’s the finale! As always there’s plenty of fine acting, another special effects Oscar win for them lined up, and our lovable characters, BUT it’s all turned into a bit of a Soap Opera and for the end of something SO grand, the film never really makes the decisions to emotionally or tonally go HUGE which was needed in order for it to truly succeed.

Despite the highs and lows that the Harry Potter series has taken, despite the different imaginings of different directors, despite all the hype being built up for this one final film and all the critics arguing over which film is the best and why this new film will be this or that; when I hear John Williams subtle yet strong theme seep onto the screen, no matter what anyone has said, or even what I’ve said, I can’t help get chills down my spine. The finale for Harry Potter has been a long time coming, this is a story that we’ve lived with for a decade, with seven films down and only one left to go.
After it all, while watching this latest trailer I can’t help but be filled with the same sense of awe and wonder that I can still recall back in 2001 when I saw the first trailer for the first film. Wow…

Just when we thought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II was complete we’ve learned that there was more work to be done. Apparently some reshoots were recently shot by the primary cast members to revamp the epilogue sequence that appears at the end of the film. Daniel Radcliffe said that they needed to make some changes to the footage because there wasn’t enough coverage and the original was a bit rushed.

The first time we noticed Kelly Macdonald it was in Danny Boyle’s cult classic Trainspotting. She was one of the many up and comers to appear in the film including Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Kevin McKidd. These days she’s charming U.S. audiences with her role in HBO’s runaway hit “Boardwalk Empire.” Now that the first season is complete, she’s got some free time but she’ll stay busy by appearing in the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga: The Deathly Hallows: Part II.
