In the race for the next big franchise, Lionsgate is now casting up their film series based on Suzanne Collins’ worldwide best seller The Hunger Games. Joining previously announced Jennifer Lawrence are now Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for the Gary Ross-directed big screen version, which is set to open March 23, 2012. Lionsgate is obviously hoping they have the next Twilight-ish success with this franchise.

Back in September we learned that Gary Ross would direct the coveted feature adaptation of Hunger Games. The book is the first in the novel trilogy by author Suzanne Collins and EW recently spoke to Ross about his vision for the big screen version. And most importantly what is he’s looking for when it comes to casting the series’ heroine Katniss Everdeen.

Gary Ross, helmer of films such as Seabiscuit and Pleasantville is in negotiations to take on The Hunger Games. According to Deadline, the feature adaptation is the first in the novel trilogy by author Suzanne Collins. Lionsgate will produce the film and has narrowed down Ross to direct. He’s just one of many candidates who’ve been circling the project including Sam Mendes and David Slade.

Just last week we reported on Gary Ross possibly directing the Spider-Man spin-off, Venom. Now according to The Playlist, the comic based film may have to take a backseat to a Steven Spielberg project. A few months ago there were rumors about a developing Spielberg feature entitled, Matt Helm, but the director is out and a close source says Ross will helm the film instead.

Sony isn’t wasting any time with their Spider-Man spin-off, Venom. A couple of weeks ago, we filled you in on the status of the film’s script which was handed in by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Now, the latest development has the studio looking to Spider-Man 4 writer Gary Ross to rewrite and possibly direct the film.
