Francis Lawrence has been confirmed as the director of Catching Fire. We told you this was rumored to be happening last month, but now it’s official. Such is the way the industry works now, and how information like this is parsed. We guess that means that everyone had about two weeks to change their minds.
A story of left-turn plot twists just as interesting as anything in the film in question, the ongoing saga of who will and who won’t be directing Catching Fire (the sequel to the mega-successful The Hunger Games) looks to have finally reached its conclusion. And, like many endings to epic tales, it can’t quite live up to what came before it, and is something of a letdown.
Water for Elephants hits theaters this weekend with a whimper… Though the film stars the almost always successful box office champ Reese Witherspoon, the most powerful heartthrob of the moment Robert Pattinson, and one the most lovable baddies of the last decade Christoph Waltz, the film falls short because it never really focuses on it’s true star, Rosie the Elephant — the one we all came to see.
Next year, we’ll see a couple of new comic based films, and one of them will be Warner Bros’ Jonah Hex. The movie is scheduled for release on June 18th, but has recently hit a snag. Over at SpoilerTV they’ve discovered a new casting call that suggests the crew will be going back into production for reshoots.
The career of 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb has been given a major boost since the release of the indie hit this past summer, and now there’s an even bigger film on the horizon. According to a report from THR, Webb may be in line to replace Steven Soderbergh on the developing drama, Moneyball.
Here’s an update on the long awaited comic adaptation, entitled Sgt Rock. Sure it sounds like an eighties musical revival but give it a chance. According to Reuters, the DC Comics property may finally hit the big screen after years of sitting in development hell. Some of you might not be familiar with the character, so lucky for you we’re here to give you lowdown.
Director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) and Will Smith might be teaming up for another film. According to Variety, Lawrence is to develop and direct, The City That Sailed, a story about a father and daughter that live on opposite sides of the Atlantic; their bond is strong enough to break off Manhattan from the U.S. and float across the Atlantic. Sweet or lame? I’m not sure yet.
The screenplay is to be rewritten by Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The City That Sailed was originally written by Andrew Niccol (Truman Show).
With the release of the new Friday the 13th set to hit theaters this weekend, New Line Cinema has fast tracked the production process for their revamp of Nightmare on Elm Street. According to THR, the studio has found a director for the project, and could start principal photography as early as this spring. Samuel Bayer has been attached to direct, and will be making his feature film debut with the remake.
