Well, it’s that time of year again, when TV networks decide which TV programs are profitable enough to save, and which are unsuccessful enough to deserve a summary execution. Up for the chopping block this year were such shows of wildly varying quality like The Office, Nikita, Parks and Recreation, Whitney, Community, Awake, and many, many more. What’s surprising, however, is how many flailing shows actually made it, and how many decent shows have been effectively cancelled.

Imagine your favorite doll as a little kid. Now imagine that you wished he could come to life and be your best friend—what a fun childhood that would make, right? Now imagine that it’s 30 years later, you’re tickling middle age, and your walking, talking, sentient and foul-mouthed teddy bear is still living with you, getting high, sleeping around and working at the local grocery store. That’s the premise behind Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane’s directorial debut, Ted, which, in red-band trailer format, basically plays like a humorous and R-rated Family Guy clip. At a recent South By Southwest panel, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane made an appearance entitled “A Conversation with Seth McFarlane,” in which he discussed not only his career, but the his upcoming reboot of the The Flinstones TV series. He also noted that the new Flintstones cartoon will be a lot like The Simpsons in the mid-‘90s. So it will basically be like everything else McFarlane does, then (rimshot!).

Interesting news for people who like to quietly nurse their undyingly bitter and cold hatred for Family Guy, the cartoon which bravely said, “What if we ripped off the basic premise of The Simpsons, and then just tossed in, like, 25 random pop culture references per episode and then called it a day? Everyone cool with that?”—even the show’s creator, Seth McFarlane, thinks the ten year old cartoon should be off the air.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. All three feature films released this week came out in January. Not really a month that inspires confidence. And when each of those films includes a bankable star (Denzel Washington, Kristen Bell, and Michael Cera, respectively) and are still dumped at the beginning of the year, there’s reason for trepidation. So proceed carefully into these DVD-infested waters.

The full trailer has been released for Family Guy’s latest Star Wars inspired film entitled, Something, Something, Something, Dark Side. It features every member of the Griffin clan reprising their roles as characters from the George Lucas franchise, and this time their doing a take on Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
